Danoinark Posted January 14, 2007 Posted January 14, 2007 I had the pleasure of meeting our Rolan Duffield this evening and watch him tie his peppy scud. The scud gets its unique name because of his late dog named Peppy of course. He has collected years of shear clippings from the pet. He mixed the dun / gray color with antron to get the blend. Its a simple fly if you follow Rolan's steps. The key is to pick out enough of the dubbing including guard hairs to make them stand out at the top so there is an undulating action to the bug. Rolan was nice enough to give me some of the peppy dub and I look forward to trying it out. He also passed along a certain tip on how to fish it. I was also lucky enough to watch him tie one of his 1/100th oz microjigs. Interestingly he builds his own molds for the jig heads. Rolan is one talented tyer, rod builder, fisherman and I look foward to fishing with him one day. I certainly enjoyed meeting this most knowledgable and personable gent. Thanks to Phil for supplying the space at Lilley's Landing. Dano Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"

Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted January 14, 2007 Root Admin Posted January 14, 2007 Sorry I missed it Dan. We had some friends show up from KC and had to divide our time- difficult situation. We're talking about doing another rod building class later in the spring/summer, off-campus location probably.
Danoinark Posted January 14, 2007 Author Posted January 14, 2007 No problem Phil, Rolan said you got tied up. Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"
Greg Posted January 14, 2007 Posted January 14, 2007 I'm sorry I missed it too. Sounds like a neat class and I've heard about the peppy scud for years. We're just trying to stay warm and dry currently in Spfld. 90% power outage in the area. Currently my mom is the only one in the family with power. Not looking forward to the cleanup either. Flysmallie Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 This is one class that I really wanted to attend. But due to the circumstances I couldn't. I would really like to see this offered again later in the year.
