Al Agnew Posted December 29, 2014 Posted December 29, 2014 Interesting point on the separation of the skirt...where you place the skirt on the hook makes a difference in the action, as well. On my lure I like there to be some separation. It makes the skirt wave more widely on that particular lure. I think the fish are striking almost entirely at the skirt as it waves back and forth, because the vast majority of the fish are hooked only with the belly hook and they sometimes have points of the treble in both upper and lower lips. I do like short-shanked hooks, though...the photo is from a few years ago and I've since gone to shorter-shanked hooks almost entirely. I'm a little low on them right now...I have some blanks, some already painted, but I gotta get them finished for myself. I'm still bummed because a huge smallmouth took me into a tree and broke off my absolute favorite one up in Minnesota. I'd had that particular lure about six years and it had gone through two paint jobs and needed another one, but it had the perfect wobble and had caught a LOT of fish.
Chief Grey Bear Posted December 29, 2014 Posted December 29, 2014 By the way...I'm still trying to find the perfect deep-diving crankbait/belly hook skirt. I'm no longer in love with a full skirt like that on a Wiggle Wart, it just seems to kill the wobble too much. Right now I'm happiest with a sparse silicone skirt on a Norman Middle N. I agree these are a little "full figured". I like that. I like bulk but not too much bulk. But they can be trimmed and thinned. I had just put this one together when I took to the pic. But I don't find that it kills the wiggle much if at all. Now on I wouldn't put this on a plug any smaller without some trimming. Also I put my skirts on upside down to give the fuller look and a much better action. I'm a 60 strand fan myself. Like the H&H spinners. Those to me are the cats butt of skirts but their rubber now days is the absolute worst. If someone made a 60 strand flat silicone skirt in the colors like I linked, I'd be in all in!!
