Bird Watcher Posted January 21, 2015 Posted January 21, 2015 A Richardson's cackler. They used to just be called Richardson's. Now all four small geese are called cacklers. You can kind of see the origins of what I'm talking about by looking at the name of the third subspecies above. b.h.(Branta hutchinsii) minima- common name "Cackling Cackling goose" Those are the only ones that were true cacklers at one time. That's why they are now Cackling cackling geese. The other ones were always known as Richardsons, Taverners, and Aleutians. Now, they've added "cackling goose" to all of those names and combined them all into one smaller bodied, tundra breeding subspecies. Taste? Tastes like a goose probably. a little one.
