Now you are trying to split hairs. Poaching is poaching. Size doesn't matter.

In the very photo of the poachers, there were no large smallmouth. One in fact I would say was undersized. There was one maybe two big LM bass and the rest were decent.

But you can look at FB all day long and see large fish, smallmouth and largemouth, being harvested from the rivers all over this state. I've seen and you've seen it too.

You guys are a little late with the gigging post this year. What gives?

This winter hasn't been nearly as bad as last years. It's actually been nice enough to get outside and do something fun so cabin fever has held off longer than usual. :secret-laugh:

It has been a relatively mild winter as far as precipitation for sure. The temps have been decent also.

We are never going to get rid of gigging. And I see no reason to.

But I could be in favor of putting restrictions on the length of the gigging pole.

That would serve two purposes.

1. One wouldn't be able to gig deep waters

2. By not being able to gig the deeper waters, one would not be able to misidentify legal gigging fish.

I was hoping to avoid this discussion this year but the MDC busted someone and I just couldn't help myself. I'm glad siusaluki posted this. I'm hoping it makes some doubters realize that this is a real issue. One that many of us have been witnessing for years.

I also agree that gigging will never be banned in Missouri but I would love to at least see some of the restrictions suggested in this thread put in place... Shorter spears, off-limit stretches, etc. Like Al, I look with envy at the states that don't allow gigging and look at their populations of giant smallmouth and wonder what kind of smallmouth fishing the Ozarks could produce with no gigging, stricter creel regulations, and increased enforcement. Growing trophy smallmouth in this state is what I want the most and is most important to me. To others it maybe growing trophy whitetail or the freedom to gig suckers or any number of things... But smallmouth are my passion so that's where I take my stance.

Well the Ozarks is producing as big a fish as she is going to. The Ozarks have just never produced really large anything except women. It's just a fact of the terrain. You can dream about it all you want. Even our lakes only produce fish half the size of your dream states.

Each and every 17+ Ozark stream bass is a jewel and a trophy. Enjoy it.

Smallie. I'm not trying to "bring" anything. As for my boat we have gigged over 20 times this year and we average about forty suckers a trip. That's 800 fish and not ONE game fish has been killed this yr. I've miss identified one fish in the last five yrs. A 12" largemouth. And I felt terrible about it. I guarantee you as others have said that I have killed more bass from a hook that was released than I have from a gig. All of us have are opinions about this subject and I doubt any of us are going to change are minds because of something said on this forum. Sorry if I offended you Sometimes it's best to agree to disagree
