kjackson Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 I don't want to interrupt all the striper love going on, but I'm working on gear and could use some guidance. I'm trying to shrink what I have (I have a store full of tackle, I think), and one thing that is bothering me is the many spinnerbaits that I'm not using. In the past two years since I've been here, I think I've used a spinnerbait once, with the exception of throwing a Super Rooster Tail one time. So--what spinnerbaits do I need for Beaver? I'm looking for advice on size, colors and blades. I have a few that are off-the-wall that I know need to be there, but I'm looking for guidance on what I must have to cover the bases. The rest of the tribe will go on the block at some point so that I can reclaim my shop. Thanks.
Feathers and Fins Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 War Eagle, anything with white and im happy. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
J-Doc Posted February 11, 2015 Posted February 11, 2015 X2 on War Eagle. I think the owner bribed them to only support local businesses. I can't get a bite on anything other than War Eagle. I've tried Strike King, Terminator, and even some lifelike looking spinnerbaits. Rascals want War Eagle. Cole Slaw I'm muddy to stisned water White and chartreuese for stained water Some type of silver or grey for clear. As for blades, experiement. I once made up one with custom grey shiny blades to match the skirt for ultra clear water. Caught a few but not what I expected. Seems the bait straight out the package is good enough. You can catch a lot of spotted bass in flooded buck brush. If the lake ever reaches above normal pool again. Need marine repair? Send our own forum friend "fishinwrench" a message. He will treat you like family!!! I owe fishinwrench a lot of thanks. He has been a great mechanic with lots of patience!
kjackson Posted February 11, 2015 Author Posted February 11, 2015 Surprisingly, I don't have any War Eagles. I'm not looking to buy any, either (although I might work a trade with someone). What I'm trying to do is thin the herd so that when I get the urge to fish a spinnerbait, I don't load all 400+ in my boat. I could see keeping maybe 30 or so in weights from 1/4 to 1-ounce. So I get the idea that white is good, but is that blade color, too? I'm thinking white/shad blend with silver blades for general use. Silver/gray/shad for clear, and white/chartreuse for stained water. The kicker is the Iowa smallmouth special: chartreuse skirt and chartreuse blades even in clear water. I'll also keep the Super Rooster Tails (RT spinnerbait) as they don't take much room.
rps Posted February 11, 2015 Posted February 11, 2015 WaR Eagle Twin Spin with a hand tied hair skirt. Works just as well as the Shannon did.
J-Doc Posted February 11, 2015 Posted February 11, 2015 400??? I have like 6 spinnerbaits. That's all I need. A few extra in a particular color. I don't lose that many and I have extra when needed. If I lose one in a trip, I'll replace it. I don't customize. I don't fret over blade colors. I buy them. They work. That simple. Lol!! War Eagle typically comes with a gold and chrome blade but you can get double chrome or double gold. Most of the color combinations sold in stores "as is" in package are just what you need. Takes all the work out. Sure you can try new things but they work as they come from the package. Need marine repair? Send our own forum friend "fishinwrench" a message. J-Doc Posted February 11, 2015 Posted February 11, 2015 And I like spinnerbaits and I do pretty well with them. What I want is a 1oz or 1-1/2oz spinnerbait from War Eagle. Need marine repair? kjackson Posted February 12, 2015 Author Posted February 12, 2015 I have probably two dozen, at least, one-ounce baits, but again, they're not War Eagle. These were from trips to Mexico. As for the surplus--400+-- it's easy to do if you never lose one.

I'll also keep the Super Rooster Tails (RT spinnerbait) as they don't take much room. The chartreuse bomb, the Winni Special, the Okoboji Express! Whatever you call it, brown fish hate the very sight of that color! Table Rock baits, but similar idea... Some kind of shad color-pearl with accents of blue and chart, pearl pepper, etc.- gold lead, silver main blades. Snowball- white with white blades, some blue in the skirt is fine like the Truman color A version of mouse, or mouse with a little chartreuse. A basic chart/white with chart/white blades for dirty water or the rivers. Black, if you night fish. Most of mine are 1/2oz, hidden weight style, also some 3/4oz. A few 1/4oz and 3/8oz for fishing shallow up the rivers or backs of pockets. War Eagle is fine, they finally went to a bigger hook. Went so far as to make my own hidden weight molds back when they were molding in those little mustads.
countryred Posted February 13, 2015 Posted February 13, 2015 No matter what lake I fished, I simplified and only kept a few basics...If they didn't work, I needed to be throwing something else. Clear water...cloudy windy weather.....shad color with either double willows or a colorado willow combo..silver blades Muddy water..cloudy windy weather.....firetiger skirt with a red colorado followed by a large indiana or an all white version of the same thing , especially if large shad are spawning Muddy water..sunny.....the ole chartreuse and white with gold blades, colorado followed by a 6 or 7 indiana 3/8 oz most of the times ....clear water, sunny, slick conditions....I ain't winging a blade if these baits don't work....start cranking or get out the soft plastics
