Kayser Posted January 20, 2007 Posted January 20, 2007 Hello all. I fish the lake about 3 times a year, mainly from june-september, but maybe in march. I stay in a comdo around MM 32-33 in a fairly large cove with 3 large boat docks, about 1-2 miles below hurricane deck bridge. I have access to shallow gravel flats all the way down to a cliff face. I mainly fish for crappie (and do fairly well), but I really want to catch a walleye out of the lake. I have some idea on how to catch them, but I was wondering how to raise the odds in my favor on these fish. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Rob WARNING!! Comments to be interpreted at own risk. Time spent fishing is never wasted.
CMAC Posted January 26, 2007 Posted January 26, 2007 Kayser, Good topic, I was a little skeptical about walleye being in the lake in huge porportions, but as I understand it they are a few swimmers. In fact right now know of some guys fishing above Hurricane deck bridge using stickbaits to catch them. I believe the Niangua arm was heavily stocked with walleye some time ago..... Can anyone help, Fishinwrench?
Wayne SW/MO Posted January 26, 2007 Posted January 26, 2007 I believe the Niangua arm was heavily stocked with walleye some time ago..... They were in that area in the 50's and they run to the base of Truman, they can't have gone far. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
fishinwrench Posted January 27, 2007 Posted January 27, 2007 Never been able to put a consistent Walleye pattern together on LO myself, I've caught some dandys including one that pushed 10lbs. but all of my Walleye catches have been random and totally by accident. Honestly though I really don't "know" walleye, never studied them much or fished with anyone that was knowlegable about targeting them. How exactly do you go "Walleye fishing" anyway? I've tried to key in on them when I accidently locate a few...but have never caught more than 3 in a days time. My personal best day (such as it is) was on a 1/8 oz. chart. marabou Roadrunner, I was actually working a big school of deep crappie on main channel structure when all of a sudden I quit getting bit by Crappie and started catching Walleye. I went back three more times that week, and numerous times thereafter but never located them there again. There is a spring run of Walleye that congregate below Truman dam every Feb/March and the fishing can get pretty hot for several days, so I'm told, but I've never timed it right. I think we just need some Yankee's to come show us how to catch'em. MDC did some heavy stocking in the early-mid 90's in the upper Osage area.
CMAC Posted February 5, 2007 Posted February 5, 2007 Warsaw area down from the dam. You can fish this area just like river fishing in S.D. or Neb. J.E., Good point, I was down there this Saturday snooping around all froze up can't launch (Drake Harbor).
Members bassfishintom Posted April 10, 2007 Members Posted April 10, 2007 I am going to be going to the lake this weekend, and I plan on trying to catch a few walleye, but have never been very successful at it there. I have had most of my success at Stockton Lake. I will be fishing at LOZ between the 76mm and the 86mm. does anybody have any suggestions? Should I fish in the upper reaches of some of the creeks? Deep water or shallow water? Keep in mind that I am going to be fishing for them after dark. Any ideas would be appreciated.
Members bojack Posted April 10, 2007 Members Posted April 10, 2007 better check the regulations about fishing for walleye after dark. there is some time spand that you can't. not sure what that is though.
Members bassfishintom Posted April 11, 2007 Members Posted April 11, 2007 Thanks bojack. I looked up the regulations, and there are only time restrictions in a few bodies of water in the state. It does apply, however, to the unimpounded portion of any creek, stream, or river. It looks like LOZ is open for Walleye fishing 24/7. Do you have any suggestions as to where and how to catch them?
Members bojack Posted April 11, 2007 Members Posted April 11, 2007 sorry but i don't. went to stockton lake this year and hired a guide to show us how to fish for walleye but the weather was so bad with rain and 3-4ft. waves we didn't get a chance to fish. from everything i've read a slow retrieve close to the bottom produces results. good luck my friend.
Members bassfishintom Posted April 16, 2007 Members Posted April 16, 2007 Well, I went to the lake, but the fishing was absolutely horrible. It rainfed so much that I couldn't find any water that didn't look like chocolate milk. The creeks were flowing way too fast to even try to do any walleye fishing. Oh well, maybe I'll try this weekend. Hopefully the weather stays decent. I am still looking for any tips. If anybody has any advice, I would really appreciate it.
