minnowhooker Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Be careful backing boat in by the dock lots of big rocks next to it , both sides. I back in a truck width over to miss them. A nice guy before I backed in warned me. Somebody tried scooting them over with a stick but when I left you would still hit them if you backed close to the dock. Crappie were 20' down left with seven on a white jig an crappie nibble.
Aggressor1988long Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Probably people throwing rocks to break ice. Not very good on boat tires
ten_scoach Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 Minnow, that was me pointing out those rocks. I had the same experience on the crappie, 20-22, plus the bonus 19in walleye. Definitely still a winter patten. Water 38-39 all day long with thin ice when we first put in at 8am. I'd love to learn why lake was so low. 5-6 foot low easy. I crossed two boats, one guy said spring draw down, one said ,muscles. Think the muscle one was confused w pomme. Best jig monkey milk. Had a valuable line lesson. Vertical jigged two rods Same depth, same jig, different line. One had floro, one had hi vis crappie line. Hi vis was 4 lb, floro was 6. Floro rod caught 95% of my fish over hi vis. Lesson- slow vertical presentation, line matters. I now believe in clear waters like winter stockton those fish can see the line just like trout!!
minnowhooker Posted March 10, 2015 Author Posted March 10, 2015 It was good talking to you and thanks again about the heads up on the rocks. I have a question about the flouro you were using, was it on a spinning reel, if it was what brand are you using? I've had zero luck with FC on a spinning reel.
wtr dogs Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 Interesting info on line visability. I also have had issues wih fluoro on spinning reels. My thoughts on lake level is they have fixed generator and are using it without any inflow from rain/snow.???? Hopefully, warm rains without FLOODS. ten_scoach Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 Right now I am using bass pro floro that I bought on clearance. Seems to work fine but have only used it vertical jigging. I have had good luck with p-line on my spinners. Just trying the floro because the price was right! She was low and should warm quick with a good warm rain or two. That sun will warm that mud up quick! Hammer time 1
Members Brandon Knight Posted March 11, 2015 Members Posted March 11, 2015 for the guys asking about fluro on spinning reels, have you tried braided line with about a 7-8 foot fluro leader? Thats how my spinning rods are rigged up and works great for me. 10lb braid and 6-7lb fluro. EDIT, sorry i re-read the first post and saw you were talking about crappie, my setups are for bass. not for sure how that would transfer to a crappie set-up especially if you are using ultralights. Still might be worth a try though.
Aggressor1988long Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 Hey guys we all know the lake is low before spring spawn. Watch and see. In two weeks it will come up, mdc and army corp of engineers are in concordance with one another
minnowhooker Posted March 11, 2015 Author Posted March 11, 2015 I might try some of that Ten Scoach.....BK good suggestion but the less knots the better for me I have a hard time dealing with the small diameter line.................getting old
zarraspook Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 Speaking of knots --- I found a web site that REALLY helped me... they have 1000+ knots listed by category and they animate the tying of them... This is the link for the fishing knots... http://www.animatedknots.com/indexfishing.php?LogoImage=LogoGrog.jpg&Website=www.animatedknots.com I'm 70...Who said you can't teach an old dog new tricks????????
