budman
Hoglaw is right about Jimmy Walker. I have used him a couple times. Take the road to Snow, I think road 406 and his house was on your left about half way to the launch at Snow.
Members caseysmith14
Perfect, thanks guys. I'll give him a call and see about shuttles. Unless he really talks me out of it or we can't work shuttles out, I think we may go for it.
Al Agnew
Extrapolating fishability from the gauges is not an exact science. Each rain event is different, and the river could be clear one time at 400 cfs and muddy the next time. As a general rule, I do use the 75th percentile as the probable cut-off point for good floating and fishing, and it's 417 cfs for today's date on Crooked Creek. But it could be clear enough to fish at something higher than that, and nothing beats eyes on the river from somebody who knows what clarity is necessary for decent fishing. The main thing about flows higher than the 75th percentile is that they mean the river is flowing very strong and fast, and if you aren't a prudent and experienced floater, getting into trouble is easy and the trouble can be more serious. A bigger, wider river flowing at 500 cfs is a piece of cake, but a narrow, twisty stream like CC at 500 cfs is no joke. Plus, the speed of the current makes a lot of areas more difficult to fish. Once the river is up above the 75th percentile, you have to use your own judgment of your floating capabilities and be prepared for taking extra care when on the water. joeD
Jimmy Walker is currently bed ridden with various health issues that require surgery. I would doubt very much if he will return to the canoe rental and shuttling business in the future. I have a person you can call for shuttle and creek info. hoglaw
I'm sorry to hear that about him and thanks for letting us know. Can you PM me the person you use for shuttles so I can put it in my phone (or post it here if he/she wouldn't mind)? Don't have a trip planned at any point in the near future but I always used Jimmy to shuttle me when I went.
Members caseysmith14
I called Crooked Creek Canoe at 870-404-6054 and must have talked with Jimmy's wife. She was very accommodating for our upcoming trip this weekend. She also said she'll keep an eye on the creek and give me a call if it doesn't shape up for a good float for the weekend. joeD
If it was me, today, I wouldn't float it. Still very strong. Also, something to keep in mind. Even if you are a stud paddler, many of the places you want/need to fish will blow right by, and you'll hardly get a decent cast in. Plus, beaching your watercraft to fish a particular spot might be dicey also, given the current CFS and gauge height. You're coming a long way, so, (gag me) "make good choices!" Members caseysmith14
Defiantly a concern of ours. We plan to launch late Thurs for just enough time to find a spot to camp, so we really won't be floating/fishing until Friday morning. May hope is by then it'll settle down by then. I was a stud paddler..... 15 years ago;)
