brian prewitt75 Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 Went out and tried to crank the boat tonight, dead battery but starter hung. When I opened the lid up and noticed the gear was hung I tapped on top of the drive with an end wrench, big mistake as I broke the plastic/phenolic cap on the drive. Does this hurt much for the short term and can it be replaced without a starter rebuild? Spoony Slayr
fishinwrench Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 Gimme a Model number. Next time just rotate the flywheel clockwise a 1/4 turn by hand and the drive gear should fall back down.
brian prewitt75 Posted May 2, 2015 Author Posted May 2, 2015 J40ELERE Hope there is no next time. Never even looked at the top of the starter before I pecked with the 9/16" wrench that I was checking the battery connections with. Spoony Slayr
fishinwrench Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 Ok, 1994 40hp It is showing as part of a drive gear kit, part# 585269 ($34.04) I can't remember if those caps serve as a locking ring retainer, but if so you WILL need to replace it OR fashion some kind of sleeve to keep the ring from popping off.
brian prewitt75 Posted May 2, 2015 Author Posted May 2, 2015 Okay thanks. I will look at the starter again and see if it looks like the spring and gear can come off if a keeper is not on there. Spoony Slayr
