Members Jeff_L Posted June 15, 2015 Members Posted June 15, 2015 Anyone have an update on status? I know the river is up, is it safe to float? How much debris is there? I'm tentatively planning on taking my dad and my 8 year old on a Father's Day short overnight as that stretch is generally pretty straightforward and not crowded, but I'm not interested in going if there is high water and strainers. Any help appreciated! Also, is Cowskin Camp/Canoe still in business? Thanks!
ollie Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 I went on the upper part yesterday and the water level was great. I hate that there is only one gauge on the Elk and it is almost to the lake. I think as far as water level you would be ok, but I have no idea about strainers down or anything like that. As far as I know the Cowskin campground is still in business. Members Jeff_L Posted June 15, 2015 Author Members Posted June 15, 2015 Thanks. I know the upper part gets cleared out by the outfitters pretty regularly because they don't like losing canoes. The part below Noel, though, is probably not as maintained. I'm not going to be getting much assistance from either grandpa or my son, so having a clean river is a priority for this float.
ollie Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 Well, that didn't stop a party of 3 who wrapped an outfitters canoe around a tree yesterday! lol I really don't know what happened other than they were very inexperienced paddlers. If it keeps raining like it is suppose to this week then everything will be blown out again. TroutRinger Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 We floated 8 miles to Two Sons on Saturday (don't remember the put in's name). The river was higher than I'm used to there but completely safe, a little stained but definitely not murky and not much debris. We did the 8 miles in less than 4 hours in rafts (not a fishing trip though I brought a rod and hooked some smallies). "Of all the liars among mankind, the fisherman is the most trustworthy." Members Jeff_L Posted June 16, 2015 Author Members Posted June 16, 2015 Thanks everyone. Looks like this tropical storm will probably put an end to this trip anyway. 3- 5" of rain in the Elk drainage at the end of the week is probably more excitement than I need for this trip.
ollie Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 Yea, if we get the rain like they think we will, then every creek around here will be blown out. Exception would be Big Sugar possibly. It is the first one to go down the quickest around here. Even then I'm not too sure.
