ollie Posted June 29, 2015 Posted June 29, 2015 Just a quick report. Buddy and I put in at Hog Heaven around 7:30 in the morning and took out at Mt. Shira around 2:00. Water was up a little and kind of pushy, but not too bad. It was up more than I like it though for fishing. We got ahead of the floatilla for the first couple of hours, but after that they caught up with us. As far as the fishing goes, it was some what slow. Sure we caught enough dinks, but nothing over 14". Most came on plastics in some form of green. I tried throwing a fluke in the morning and struck out. I think the water needs to come back down a little and then level out for it to be really good again this summer. Saw a couple of nice smallies that looked like they would go around 18", but then again that is why they are still in there. Too smart! Something that struck me as odd though. Already on Elk there has been one kid die and then just last week another almost drowned as well. All on this same stretch of water we floated. I don't understand why either. It is an easy float. As long as you get yourself in the right position to begin with you won't have any problems. I did see where a canoe got wrapped around a tree down and this is the same place that another one a couple of weeks ago got caught up in. It is on the corner when you go past the road where all the chunk rock is. I still don't get it because you almost HAVE to make yourself go that way to get sucked up in it. The current does not sweep you into it to begin with. I guess I just know how to paddle after all these years and know what to expect on the river. GloryDaze Posted June 29, 2015 Posted June 29, 2015 Thanks for the report- how are Russ and Jean Ann at Hog Heaven, havent seen them in a long time? Yeah, you could honestly almost do that section blindfolded. Just cannot imagine where the danger is- are you talking about when you get past all the chunk rock and the river makes a hard left? ollie Posted June 29, 2015 Author Posted June 29, 2015 Russ and Jean Ann were looking good, but they were busy and didn't really have any time to visit. As far as the location. If you are driving on H highway there is a section that comes right by the river. A deep hole with a slough next to it and then downstream from there not too far. Not even a mile. Going downstream you make a right, but it isn't a hard right or anything like that. And your right Glory, I think I could do that stretch blindfolded as well! Just novice people in canoes I guess. Now looking at Google maps I think your right, it does make a left after that sweeping turn. Still though, there wasn't anything dangerous there. Like I said the river doesn't even push you into that tree that is down. There is current there, but you really have to try to hit that tree. Amery Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 I keep waiting for the river to drop so I can do my fav summer ritual, night fish the Elk. Still waiting.
GloryDaze Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 If I were to fish any river at night, most definitely would pick the Elk. Are you wading or hopping around from section to section on a canoe? Follow me on Twitter @DazeGlory
Amery Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 Usually take a canoe, pick an access, go a 1/2-1 miles. Then paddle back to the car. The fishing is almost always really good.
