Al Agnew Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 You might look for Larry Dablemont's old book...I think it's titled "The Great American Johnboat" or something like that. Gives very detailed plans on how to build an Ozark johnboat, which of course is what the Shawnee is patterned after. The Dablemonts built johnboats mainly for the Big Piney and Gasconade, and most were 14-16 feet long, shorter than the old White River johnboats and the Current/Black River johnboats. Also, the Dablemont pattern used planks running across the bottom instead of lengthwise planks like the others. One of the reasons that Current River johnboats stopped being made was that it became almost impossible to find clear pine planks 18-24 feet long to go down the bottom. I don't have the book in front of me right now, but as I remember, the plans included using marine plywood instead of planks for the bottom.
