Well, bad news fellas... I'm BAAAACK!

I made it to Tim's Fly Shop around 8:30am and thought I'd stop in and say hi, but the door was locked.

So I did a little scouting since this was my first time at RR and found that I wanted, for whatever reason, to fish right at the entrance (where I first scouted...of course... duh...)

I took my new Eagle Claw 6' 6" fiberglass with the Pfleuger '66 model Medalist and set it up to cast a red SJW. Well, Dano... you may be right. A 4 wt line may just be a bit light on that rod.

Anyway, I struggled right off the bat with my set up and casting (give me a break... It's been FOUR MONTHS and I ain't no Lefty Kreh.) Cold fingers made it tough to tie any kind of knots in my leader and tippet, but I finally got the SJW on my 6X tippet. Then, I made BEAUTIFUL wind knot on my fourth cast, causing another trip to the truck to work that puzzle.

THEN, after several more casts, I poo-pooed again, and yet another trip for puzzle solving. With that, I made a change or two and tied on an egg. Got a few follows, but no takers. Then a crackle back... Same scenario....

By this time, I was getting a little tired and a lot cold, so I took a break and warmed my fingers, rested my knee, and consumed some peanut butter crackers with a Sierra Mist... A couple of guys moved through the pool I was fishing, but they did not do any better.

I decided to make another change and switched to my 5 wt and the ol' reliable Olive Wooly Bugger. After a few casts, the guy fishing in the pool below mine landed a nice 'bow. He released him in the water, but from the bend in his rod, the time it took to land him, and the view I had of the fish's head, I would say he was around 16-18 inches.

I fished another hour or so, then decided I was getting cold again and my knee was telling me it was time for some horizontal time. So I loaded up the truck and moved to Beverly.... I mean headed home.

I DID stop in and say hi to Tim. If he would have had some 2 lb Vanish, he would have made an extra sale today....

Well, I took no fish to hand, but found I can handle standing and fishing for a few hours and my cast, while suffering from a little rust, is still just as bad as it was in October....

Didn't see you, DuckyD... Hope you did better!

Terry I am not so sure a 6 wt is not the best for those 6'6" rods. It takes a good 20 feet of line or better to make them perform even with a 5 wt. I fished mine yesterday with a 5 wt dt and feel a line size up will be just right. I will have to give it a try. Glad you got out. Dano

Good to see you are fishing again Terry. I'm sure it felt great just to be out there.

What did you think about Roaring River? I've only been down there twice now, but it is a lovely place. And somedays they have free hot dogs!! (thanks Steve)

I enjoyed it and will be back during C&R season. Not much for combat fishing during regular season.... I missed the hot dogs, but hey... PB crackers are pretty good...

Now... ON TO TANEYCOMO!!!!! ;)

Terry

Last time I was there, I fished that same area. Yesterday I stayed up on the upper end of the park. Caught lots of fish.
