Tommy has seen WAY more big smallies than me and he said it was right around that 20" mark. An 18" smally is doing good to break 3# judging by the few I've seen. Tommy caught one with me in late May that only weighed 2.40#! It was the skinniest 18" smallmouth I've ever seen though.

I've caught a 19" that weighed 3.2, and I've also caught a 19" that weighed 4.1. It just depends how fat they are.

A really healthy 20 incher will go 4 pounds, but true 4 pounders are pretty rare.  And a lot depends upon individual fish.  The 20 incher I caught while floating with Mitch a couple weeks back would not have come very close to 4 pounds, because it was a lean fish with a very big tail fin in relation to its length.  Most of the bigger fish in that section of Big River are like that.
