M_Taylor Posted October 11, 2015 Posted October 11, 2015 Fished from 7-1:30. And then 3:30-5. I fished the Everett Big Bass event today. First time doin something like that. I really enjoyed it and hope to do it again next year. I put in at Rocky Branch and fished that area all day. Water temp was around 72. Conditions were calm and sunny once the fog burned off. I had made a decision beforehand to not use any finesse gear and I stuck to that. Reaction baits and topwater. Mainly shad colors. I ended up with about a dozen fish. But I only weighed one. (Which was an ounce shy of a check for the hour) Just couldn't get that kicker fish to be for sure in the money. I saw one though. Darn bass attacked a bluegill at the end of my 7ft rod that could of tapped him on the head. I tried to fool him throughout the day but he must have gotten full. It taught me that fish will hit topwater during the middle of the day with no clouds. Got numerous fish on a prop bait after that. Would love to hear how other people on the forum faired. It was five pounds and some change to win the event I believe. RyanG, Lance34, J-Doc and 2 others 5
J-Doc Posted October 11, 2015 Posted October 11, 2015 I had a good 4 or 5 pounder attack a topwater bait over 40 ft in the dead of summer with bluebird skies. They will definitely bite topwater in sunny skies. Hate I missed this one. It's one of two that I'll fish. fisherofmen11 1 Need marine repair? Send our own forum friend "fishinwrench" a message. He will treat you like family!!! I owe fishinwrench a lot of thanks. He has been a great mechanic with lots of patience!
RyanG Posted October 11, 2015 Posted October 11, 2015 Had a college series event out there today as well, only weighed one fish for that. But first was only 6 pounds. Caught a bunch of short fish and had a lot of missed opportunities. I couldn't pick up a top water bite for anything, caught most on a drop shot. Had issues with my fishing line and broke off a half dozen times on hook sets. Gotta figure that out. Good day, just really slow for us. fisherofmen11 1
fisherofmen11 Posted October 11, 2015 Posted October 11, 2015 I almost fished it but changed my mind. I have never fished a public tournament before. It would have been pure luck for me to win it but at least with biggest bass I know I would at least have a chance. I believe I have caught 3 approx 5 lb bass this year. One on a jerk bait, one top water and one on a worm. Thanks for sharing.
Champ188 Posted October 11, 2015 Posted October 11, 2015 I suppose one good aspect of holding a "big bass" event on Beaver is that you can get in the money without even catching a 2-pounder. Hope lots of money was raised for the kids in need. fisherofmen11 1

Not to mention I'm sure I wasn't the only one that spent $100 bucks on gear at my local bait shops in preparation for the event. RyanG 1

I've had a lot of success with the Alberto knot and it's quick and easy.

You really don't need to go light for bites on drop shots, I use 20lb braid and tie on a 12lb fluorocarbon leader and I can straighten out a hook on a snag with that combo and doesn't bother the fish one bit. fisherofmen11 1
Members bc23champ Posted October 11, 2015 Members Posted October 11, 2015 I fished the Everett as well. Caught 3 keepers. Won $200 for closest to 2 lbs for an hour. Spinnerbait bite til the sun came up then cranked all day with nothing else but shorts. Went back lack out from 4-7 hickory creek area. Caught 10-11 good fish on the same spinnerbait and cranks. 4-5 keepers probably would have weighed 7-8lbs Water color makes all he difference in the world for me. I absolutely hate fishing clear water. Give me dirty all day everyday M_Taylor, Lance34 and RyanG 3
RyanG Posted October 11, 2015 Posted October 11, 2015 I was breaking 8 pound and then broke on 10 as well. So all the line on those rods are coming off. Tied with Palomar and clinch knot and switched back and forth. And it always broke the same way. My line isn't old either. I take care of my stuff too. It was just one of those days, live and learn kinda deal I suppose. I might have missed something but that's part of it. Never had an issue like that but I'll figure it out!
