Does anyone know if the Stone Mill area is on Army property or is it public.  MO Trout Hunter gives direction through the fort/post, but it looks like public roads take you there on Google Maps..

My old copy of Chuck Tryon's book says you need a permit to get to it. I think that's the only published stream I haven't been to.

l talked to the Post outdoor recreation folks.  Yes you do have to gain access from inside the post, but they are doing some maintenance on the stream right now.  So I might take my daughter and check it out.  If it sucks we can walk/wade the banks of the Big Piney or hoop over to Mill.  My girl doesn't care if she is catching trout, chubs, bluegill, or bass.  Quick note, the road on the delivery truck uses has been fixed, the NFS website is out of date.

It is only accessible from the west (Army) side. It is at the base of a steep bluff- there are 'roads' off of J which run out on top of the bluffs, (scenic view of the bridge training lake) but hiking down from there is not an option. Also, these roads were bulldozed closed after 9/11, which is a shame as it was a sweet picnic spot.

I tried to go out to Stone Mill on Saturday, but the road to it was closed.  It was late in the day so I moved out the east gate.  I stopped at Spring Creek to check it out.  There was one really deep hole upstream of the bridge with good rock in it.  Is there more like that?
