I have not had any luck netting shad yet with my new cast net. Are they good size shad you are netting? I have thrown about 15-20 times on schools that were down about 20ft and see the net on the sonar going through the bait but nothing to show. I bought 5/8 inch mesh with 1.5 lbs of lead per foot to get it to sink faster. Its an 8 ft. net. Maybe the bait I have thrown into are very small shad that are swimming through it????? I need to find some bait schools in shallower water perhaps. If I can and have time I'll hunt them in shallow water... But today I netted them in 40 fow. They where about 10 feet down on my graph. My net didn't reach bottom but but still pulled up way more than I needed. The shad I got weren't huge either. About 4-6 inches. I'm using a 6 ft net. Seems to be working out for me.

One time I saw one shad flip on top and got 2 dozen gizzards and a 2lb bass but that is like getting a 30lb striper on your first cast. I did not catch one good fish that day, it was like all my luck was used up in the first 5 minutes. lol
Dan the fisherman Posted December 13, 2015 Author Posted December 13, 2015 I'm not sure, I think gizzards though. They were the same as the ones I netted for u that one day we were out.
Members Johnson Guide Service Posted December 14, 2015 Members Posted December 14, 2015 Gota say one thing, those walleye taste a lot better then striper but the rush from a hard fighting striper taste good too. good luck on the Hickory to Hourshoe trip. Looks like your ahead of anpother mudline. I did make it up Warr Eagle Thursday. Just had to see what it looked like on the other side of the mud. Put in at the gate and was pretty clear from there up. Did not get in till about 3 so only fished about 30 minutes then went for shad. Got good 6 inch baits letting net sink down about 20 feet. As was putting on trailor with the sun going and air cooling saw some surface activity, was tempted to put back in but had a long drive home.Water temp up here was still in the low 50ss due to warmfront. Mud coming back now. When rain brings mud and you have to fish north of mudline, after about a week the first to clear will be on the other side which can also be very good too. It is also the first to cool or heat. Which can be good or bad. Since you fishing the horseshoe area heres a pic of one a 16 year boy got on his birthday right off the point back in March. He got this 46 and a 38 pound. Lance34, J-Doc and Samkam1 3
J-Doc Posted December 14, 2015 Posted December 14, 2015 I just want one 40lb+ striper. I can't afford to hang a 90-100lb tarpon on the wall, but a 40-50lb striper.....I can do that. ;-) Lance34 1 Need marine repair? Send our own forum friend "fishinwrench" a message.
