Flysmallie Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 I would choose the Olympus over the Panasonic in the waterproof models. I know people that own both and it seems the Olympus models are just a little easier to use. And even though I'm a Nikon guy, avoid their waterproof models at all costs. I have two friends that have bought them in the past year and both had issues. My next one will be one of the Olympus Tough models. Not that I need another freaking camera to lug around but I do need one that will fit in my waist pack and can take the abuse of being wet. Smallieguy87 1

Like i said i've tried the go pro but didn't care much for the snap on LCD and housing. I've used an Iphone a bit but id rather not get that wet and i don't think the water proof cases for those are up to snuff or rugged enough.
Flysmallie Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 Yep I have a GoPro. wonderful camera for what it is but not very practical to use as a point and shoot for fish pics. Have a iPhone too and have been using it more lately just because of ease of use. The water proof cases for it take away from the usability. Have a DSLR with a variety of lenses that I carry in my canoe and I get some awesome pictures out of it, but again not very handy when you are fishing. All I can figure is that I need to keep buying cameras. Not sure my wife has the same feelings but I don't understand the frequent trips to the nail salon so I guess we are even. Smallieguy87 1

I mostly wade more then anything and have a small pack for lures and other things. I'll have to look at the olympus and see if it would be something that could be worn around the neck fairly comfortably. I try to get my wife to understand all my St.Croix rods and you buy different types of fishing lines for different techniques and how the same applies to the fishing rods themselves...she either is not convinced or doesn't care lol
Flysmallie Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 I've seen a lot of them clipped onto belt loops with one of these. Smallieguy87 1

I've shot the Nikon AW100 for about four years now with no problems except that I sat on mine with the screen down against solid rock and cracked the screen, the next to last day of our Colorado River trip. Came back planning on buying another one just like it and found out they had been discontinued. Looked at the replacements from Nikon, and all got mediocre reviews. But I found a new AW100 on Amazon and bought it. I've carried around waterproof point and shoots ever since the first ones became available...have shot Olympus, Pentax, and Panasonic besides the Nikon. All were good, all lasted about 3-4 years before something went wrong. As for carrying them, most these days are small enough to fit easily in a shirt pocket. All my fishing shirts have Velcro tabs on the pockets, so I just carry mine in a shirt pocket at all times on the river. One thing you have to remember to do regularly is to clean the gaskets wherever there is an opening, like the battery/memory card gate. The gaskets will get dirty and the camera won't be waterproof anymore. Smallieguy87 1
Flysmallie Posted February 17, 2016 Posted February 17, 2016 It's weird Al but I just haven't heard many good things about those Nikons. And a lot of what I have heard has came from dedicated Nikon users. I had been looking at the Nikon AW1 mirrorless, which is just basically a mini DSLR but waterproof, and now I'm afraid to pull the trigger on one. Good of info on the gaskets. They do require some extra maintenance.
