Stump bumper Posted April 6, 2016 Posted April 6, 2016 I was the worst at throwing a cast net, missed about 30% of the time with a 4 foot net. Then I bought a 7 foot net and could not throw it at all, I watched people and videos and tried things that clipped to belt, held the net in my teeth and still was at 30% good casts with the bigger net. Now if you can throw a cast net, you can laugh at me now.... Then I found this video from down under, messed up the first time, then realized I was using the wrong arm and switched hands and now I can not remember how to mess up, perfect circle every time. So if you have trouble watch this, practice in the driveway, go back watch again then practice one more time and you should be perfect.
J-Doc Posted April 6, 2016 Posted April 6, 2016 I watched probably 20 videos or more. I just could not get the mechanics down. Then I found a video of a cute little gal in a bikini throwing a massive nethe off a dock. I figure if she can, I can. So I watched it over and over, rewinding and watching to learn the mechanics. Now I pancake everytime. I finally figured out the mechanics of it and how or why...it opens. You have to have what's called "triggers". Three points of a circle. Each point has to release before the other to create outward cast so the net is opening up and spreading out while at the same time rotating. If you flick the last trigger with your non casting hand and put a spin in the net, it's even better. I throw my smaller 6ft net different than my 8ft net. Sometimes you have to fine tune and find what works best for you. Need marine repair? Send our own forum friend "fishinwrench" a message. He will treat you like family!!! I owe fishinwrench a lot of thanks. He has been a great mechanic with lots of patience!
Stump bumper Posted April 7, 2016 Author Posted April 7, 2016 My problem was trying to hold the net in my left hand and thinking that the spinning hand was the throw, now I understand the three points and throwing the net out of the hand I am holding it with. I don't know why it took so long to sink in. I feel so empowered to see that pancake every throw....I am ready to retire to the Beach now.

Wore pencils skirts, stilettos, and sheer blouses every class. I always sat in the front row for Ms. Morehead's class. True story. We all have different things that help us learn.

Dan the fisherman Posted April 8, 2016 Posted April 8, 2016 That's complicated to me. But ur throwing a 7 foot and I'm throwing a 6. I just straight up just toss mine and it just lands open lol.
Robert Haynes Posted April 8, 2016 Posted April 8, 2016 I throw an 8 ft net and it gets a little complicated after 6ft. I throw similar to the video but I may learn that method as well. Most of my netting is when the shrimp make their run out of the marsh and into the Gulf. They get stacked up at the weirs. The boats get stacked up close also and it is embarrassing when everyone watches you blow a throw time after time. Then they find out your not from Louisaiana and they understand why you can't throw a net. So, for pride sake, I practice and do well throwing the big net now. Stump bumper 1
Stump bumper Posted April 8, 2016 Author Posted April 8, 2016 The main point I got was splitting the net into thirds and also the fact he did not grab the weights with his left hand but further up on the net. Makes me want even a bigger net now. I guess everyone has to find their own method, but I feel fool proof since I started splitting the net like this guy showed. Bring on a 10 footer!!!
