Seth Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 How do I get more body to my marabou jigs? I am tying 1/32 and 1/64 oz jigs and my jigs don't seem to be as "fluffy" or have as body to them as the ones I always see in pictures or buy. Does it matter which type of marabou plume that I am tying with? Most of the plumes I have are "blood quills". Do other cuts work better for jigs? Does it not matter that much if they look thin? I've caught fish on them before, but I guess I just want to tie the best looking jigs I can.
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted February 27, 2007 Root Admin Posted February 27, 2007 I usually use strung marabou for jigs but you can use the larger feathers with bigger quills. Peel the soft, lower plumes off and cut the ends off. As far as body, keep adding more and more till you have the look you want. But don't make them too big... it's better to have a low profile jig than a bulky one- I think.
Seth Posted February 27, 2007 Author Posted February 27, 2007 Do you tie with the soft, lower plumes?
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted February 27, 2007 Root Admin Posted February 27, 2007 Sorry- yes- that's what you tie with.
Terry Beeson Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 I agree with Phil about the low profile. Get some "store bought" jigs that work and put them in a glass of water or fish tank. Look at the profile... very slim. The jigging action that flares the maribou is what gets the fish's attention... at least that's MY opinion. And strung maribou is a godsend... Seth Posted February 27, 2007 Author Posted February 27, 2007 Ahh...I guess I been tying witht he wrong part of the marabou. I always just tied in the long ends of the marabou. I'll try that when I get home and use the fibers towards the bottom of the stem.
brittsnbirds Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 I've been using the Ostrich plumes for the body. Hurl it up to the eye. Makes a real nice fluffy body.
Seth Posted February 28, 2007 Author Posted February 28, 2007 What do you mean by "herl"? Do you mean palmer it or do you do you actually use Ostrich Herl strands? I'm confused.
Members Patricks on the White Posted February 28, 2007 Members Posted February 28, 2007 Seth: If you have a vice that rotates, alternate a layer of maribou on the top, then the bottom; two layers each should give you a full body effect. I use the tips so that the stems are thinner, otherwise you end up with a collar thats too thick. Patricks Patricks
brittsnbirds Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 I use the swords and a rotating vice and palmer it forward. Makes a nice even fluffy body. But that's just one way. You can also palmer the marabou forward also. Makes a really ratty looking body. That's my preference.
