chub minnow Posted March 5, 2007 Posted March 5, 2007 Went to the Big Sugar just above the Elk on Sunday. Fished all day, tried crawdad patterns, crankbaits, and didn't catch anything. On my "last" cast of the day using a 4" trick worm, I managed to hook into a nice little kentucky. There were tons of these size fish in the creek, but they are still really hard to entice into biting. Has anyone else had any luck on the Elk or the Big Sugar this season?
ollie Posted March 6, 2007 Posted March 6, 2007 Tell me for sure that was a largemouth and not a kentucky your talking about. "you can always beat the keeper, but you can never beat the post" There are only three things in life that are certain : death, taxes, and the wind blowing at Capps Creek!
Al Agnew Posted March 6, 2007 Posted March 6, 2007 Definitely looks like a largemouth in the top photo...second photo didn't load for me. Don't be fooled by the tooth patch on the tongue--at least 15% of largemouths have a tooth patch on their tongue.
jdmidwest Posted March 6, 2007 Posted March 6, 2007 It looks like a nice Kentucky by the spots. Where is the Sugar or the Elk River at? "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
Danimal Posted March 6, 2007 Posted March 6, 2007 I'm callin' largemouth. The river is in S.E. Mo. near the towns of Pineville & Noel. Good fishing if you can avoid the rental canoe caravan. I usually try to hit it during the week in the warmer months. RELEASE THOSE BROWNIES!!
chub minnow Posted March 7, 2007 Author Posted March 7, 2007 Yes, I think that was actually a largemouth. Has the spots and tooth patch like you said, but the mouth was pretty big for a kentucky. The spotted and largemouth run together in this creek and you can catch all three types of black bass as well as nice size rock bass here. You do definitely want to avoid the warmer weekends as the canoe hatch can be epic.
taxidermist Posted March 9, 2007 Posted March 9, 2007 Iits a largemouth the stripe down the saide the yellow coloration and the body shape, all say largemouth, the tooth patch is not going to tell you what species it is.
Wayne SW/MO Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 If you click the photo and follow the loading of the large pic, its defiantly a Largemouth. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
ollie Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 I caught a nice greenie down there on Sunday, but the whites haven't make it upstream yet. Let me warn everybody of the dangers of leaving your car parked on a gravel bar - KIDS VANDALIZING!! My neighbor and I left his car at the takeout and when we came around the bend we caught two kids trying to bash in his windshield. We chased them about two miles before we could get their license plate number. Senseless acts of violence from bored teens. I have never had any problems down there and the first time I get my neighbor to drive he has problems. To make matters worse, he lost a greenie that was around 6-7 pounds and that was his only fish on all day. Wayne SW/MO Posted March 14, 2007 Posted March 14, 2007 Was that in OK? Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
