Kansas Fly Fisher Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 Slippery, Couple years back the wife and I spent some time in Colorado on a fishing trip. We stopped in Colorado Springs to visit some family while out that way. If I remember right, there were a couple of small lakes (ponds) in town where the locals would spend some time trout fishing. Most of my time was spent more interior on the Arkansas River. There's a place near Sedalia (I think it's spelled right) where there were plenty of spots to pull off the road to fish. Sedalia, again if I remember right was about a days' drive from Colorado Springs. I hope this helps a bit, I'm sure there are others that can help out more. Enjoy your trip. Terry Beeson Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 Colorado Springs... Let's see... you'll be within "spittin' distance" of the Arkansas and South Platte Rivers... Yep... I bet you can find a lake, creek, or river or two to fish while you're in the area... A friend of mine fished the Arkansas somewhere near Pueblo a few years back and really had a blast! Members twhit Posted March 12, 2007 Members Posted March 12, 2007 You will only be a few hours from South Park area of Colorado--of South Park cartoon fame. The South Platte runs through this area--particularly the area between Elevenmile and Spinney Reservoirs, i.e., the "Dream Stream". This is near Lake George, CO. Check out the following website for detailed hatch information: http://www.bluequillangler.com/stream.html There is a great rainbow run with the Spring spawn. Heed any special regs in place during the spawn and be cautious not to disturb. This is blue ribbon water and is exclusively catch and release--strictly enforced. Won't catch the numbers that you may be used to on Taney but nothing better than the clean mountain air and mostly wild trout slurping flies off the top. I will say that my experience has been fish what your used to. It is a tailwater fishery and small scuds, midges, and san juan worms are good fill ins if there is not a hatch coming off. BWOs are great during a hatch although can really challenge your presentation skills--particularly with a high sky and crystal clear water...
SilverMallard Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 Arkansas River just West of Colorado Springs. Not too much of a drive for day trips. Just do some Googling for websites and more info. I've fished there and it can be great. SilverMallard "How little do my countrymen know what precious blessings they are in possession of - and which no other people on Earth enjoy." jscheetz Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 Hey Simon, I would echo twhit's advice on the Platte. The "Dream Stream" Section can be great although it gets pounded really hard - I have never caught great numbers there but usually good size. It is more out in the open - however my favorite place there is the Elevenmile canyon section itself. Beautiful mountain type setting and the stream is a bit shallower and acts more like a typical canyon stream with pools, flats etc etc - I have had GREAT fishing there in the canyon. Caught them on everything there - never been this early, but have used dries and nymphs same as any stream with good luck. The only concern is this early in the year the snow runoff may make some of the mountain streams unfishable - just depends on the weather. Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted March 13, 2007 Root Admin Posted March 13, 2007 I've been there... beutiful place. Caught rainbows in pools using a ..... drum roll...... zebra midge! They loved them.
Members mAngler Posted March 13, 2007 Members Posted March 13, 2007 Make sure you take your midge patterns size #22 and smaller. First of the mayfly hatches could start while your there if you're lucky. Take some generic mayfly patterns in the same sizes. The water will be low and slow this time of year. Inlets to the deeper pools should be good places to start. Enjoy the scenery.. It's about as pretty as any place you'll ever visit. I'm jealous... Have fun! mAngler
