While down at BSSP on opening weekend I purchased some extremely small tippet rings for my fly rod. I had never used them before( really never seen them before) but after using one for my nymphing setup I don't think I'll ever not use one now. It worked out great. I used a 6' piece of 5x to my tippett ring and then a 4' piece of 7x to my first fly. Not only do you not have to worry about knots slipping because of line size differences but I found that when I got a tangle ( and with my sub-par casting technique it happened more than I would like to admit in that 5 days) by snipping the tippet knot on one side of the ring I could almost always slide the main line and tippet ring out of the mess and simply re-tie a piece of tippet. Anyway, I can't seem to locate these in any local stores , does anyone know of anywhere else they can be purchased? Don't even know if anyone else uses these or not.

These are what Tim at Tim's Fly Shop by Roaring River turned us onto that same weekend! I can't remember how much they were, but they really are great! (He also said Mr. Ducky needs to learn to tie knots, and when to NOT cut the line, but that's another story! :))That was the first time I saw them, too.

I can bring home the trout...fry it up in a pan...and never let you forget I caught it! 'Cause I'm a woman!

I've seen them in Backcountry Outfitters.

Thanks to all for the info. I know that these wouldn't be any good for the dry fly angler but if you do a lot of nymphing you should give them a try. A very handy little item.

I have sold those little rings for years, when I worked for Jack at Roaring River we sold them by the thousands every year, and don't worry they work as well for the dry fly fisherman as they do for the nymph fisherman, I've used them for over 20 years on the san juan fishing small drys and they work great, I grease my whole leader when fishing drys and if you put a little grease on the ring along with leader they will float all day. The little rings are inexpensive, only .50 cents each, these things can make a leader last 6 months or better. I tie one on the end of a 7 1/2 4x or 5x leader, and then tie what ever tippet on to the ring I need, fast simple and if you have the aging eye syndrome :) then they are even better, give em a try, you might like em. And if you are a new fisherman and haven't learned you knots yet, it can keep you fishing longer with out all the headaches, but you need to learn your knots because sometime you'll lose the ring and need to rebuild a leader on the river.

My dad doestn like to tie blood or surgeons knots, so he uses a small barrel swivel and clinch knots...its not good for dry fly work though. Cheers.

So Michael does have them, Ronnie? Great! Been lookin' for some. They are becoming popular. I hope Davy checks this and gives us his take on using them. I think he does....

I know Bryce used to use them, liked them but I've always wondered why you would bother tying two knots instead of one.

Blood knots are a pain in the proverbial, the triple surgeons I do like, its faster and stronger than double unis. The pain for me sometimes is my fly connection knot (Eugene Bend) is way stronger than the surgeons if I do bust its at the leader-tippet connection.

Now if your tying two Improved Clinches to the ring, thats going to be actually weaker than the surgeons, particularly in flourocarbon

Then I got to thinking some more on reading this post

_ if I wanted a reeealllly strong connection 2 Eugene Bends or two Davy Knots to a ring might be the best bet unless anyone has a better leader tippet knot for flourocarbon than the surgeons (and don't mention the blood knot LOL)

Cheers

I picked some up at BCO last week - but they may have been Michaels last batch. He had to hunt around for them. I'm not sure what I think of them? At first I thought they were the greatest thing since sliced bread - but then I got a bad tangle that I'm not sure I would have gotten otherwise. I'm going to keep using them for awhile and see.
