The Brown is Down...Again

I got off work at 3:30 & got to my spot about 4pm.

At 4:45pm this little scrub buck walked out. I was kinda shocked to see antlers in the daylight. I was so excited that I barely got the muzzle all the way out the window before I pulled the trigger. I didn't squeeze or breathe or anything, I just let the 7mag bark. It was a 40 yard shot, so I wasn't too concerned about missing the shot. Well, that almost cost me. I hit it in the front shoulder & the bullet didn't exit out. I was using the 139gr recoil reduced bullet. I was lucky that it exploded the shoulder, turning bone into chrapnel. It took me 20 minutes to find the first speck of blood. This deer wasn't bleeding out like a double lung shot. I had to look for the leaves all rustled up where it drug that front leg. It kinda sprayed blood in small dots. Not the most ideal blood trail to follow, now that it was getting dark. The deer ran about 150 yards before crashing into a barbed wire fence.

This is my first buck since 2014 & the first deer I've killed with a rifle in 8 years. :serious-business:

Nice one.  Where you hunting that you can still shoot with modern centerfire.  AR, or OK?

I made an evening trip down the hill on Christmas eve.  No expectation to see anything.  A doe and 2.little ones cam out and nibbled on my winter wheat patch, about 60 yards away from my wife's stand.  Wasn't feeling it at all, finally resorted o wolf howls played on my phone to get them to leave.  Even then they were not really spooked.  Haven't been back, am busy trying beat whatever sort of sinus cold is currently trying to kill me.

I'm going to lay off the deer a couple weeks & try to get better at catching winter crappie.
