i had other things come up this weekend so i didnt make the trip down. I dont have a problem with a little fun competition as long as people are respected and the fish too. It spices up the usual monotany of the everyday fishing down at montauk. Im there to have a good time and the minute i ever get stressed or feel pressure to win i will quit fishing all together. Im down at montuak many many weekends a year and the tournaments are just a little fun, and easygoing at least for me and the guys i know who are usually the guys that fill the board down there regularly. Some would tend to think that we focus on big fish and trophy hunting but ill catch 75 in a day most of the time, and so do the other guys. Nothing is really taken serious, and those (cheaters/disrespectful) never end up winning anyways. Theres a few bad apples though that ruin it and give the rest of everybody a bad name....

As for the violators , its sad but it happens everyday down there. Many of these guys that cheat never end up winning anyways so they are just treading water. I laugh when i see guys trying to snag lunkers then i come in and hook the fish legitimately. Cheaters never win in the long run and they have to live with themselves. I could never cheat any game animal and violate any regulations because the way i was brought up. No matter what the prize could be for anything i will go about competing with respect and abiding the law.

I won the mens tournament last year and could care less about that $25 certificate to the lodge :), there could be no prize or tournament at all and id still be down there because i love the place...but a little friendly competition never hurt anybody...but i relax and just have fun!

could you post the pics, id like to see if its anybody i may have seen down there, or those that i should watch out for

My 8 year old son kept asking me why I wasn't going to join the tournament. I told him that if I did, it would not be relaxing for me. I go down there to relax. I get up to fish the whistle, because thats just what you do. If I catch fish, great. If I don't, no big deal. I have no problem with Montauk putting on a tournament, I am sure it brings a ton of business to the park and allows them to keep up a great state park and trout park. Conservation needs to be first and foremost on the minds of the anglers down there regardless of what you are down there for.

Unfortunately I can't post them, they were deleted to free up space on my card. I figured I would show them to a Ranger or Conservation Agent if I saw one and point out their campsite, but I never saw the enforcement folks.

Who sponsored the tournament? Was it the DOC? If so I don't appreciate them using my tax dollars to sponsor it. I also am apposed to fishing tournaments (all). I think it takes away the sanctity of the sport. I wouldn't be against sending them my thoughts.

Maybe next time there will be a kopper around!

Trout derbys and tournaments are usually sponsored by local Chambers of Commerce, local government, and other businesses [like fly shops] to draw in business and advertising.

I think that this one was by the MO Trout Fisherman's Association. I don't know that for sure and don't want to falsely accuse an organization that had nothing to do with it.

I stand corrected, I don't think it was them. Sorry if I stepped on any toes!

What has me puzzled these park tournaments is that nobody really promotes them, and nobody ever bothers to publish the results.

How many people participate?

Who wins?

What do they win?

Who sponsors them?

Who is MTFA, and how can you contact them?

It seems that there are a lot more questions than answers. 10pt, you fish those tourney's a lot, maybe you can shed some light on this.

Well I know what I will be doing tomorrow. A fat e-mail to the MDC to find out who was in charge then go from there. But that goes to show you and mcp633 probably will agree. If MDC sponsored it, they sure as heck aren't going to Police it! I think they might consider that entrapment. What do you think mcp? That would sure put a black eye on the MDC.

Is the poacher hotline manned or is it a recording?
