I bought two Humminbird Helix 7 depth finders last year one is a DI and the other is a SI. The DI I have at rear console and SI on trolling motor. The problem I am having is that I lose depth on DI at console at 8 MPH, I mounted transducer 18 inches of to the drivers side rear of transom. First run out with it last year I went over another boats wake and transducer broke off the plastic mount. So I don't know if it would pick up depth or not. Got another plastic ( UGH ) bracket and mounted transducer at rear center of transom behind motor like I stated 8 mph and I lose depth. I have contacted Humminbird about a transducer that goes in hull' they tell me that they have one but have to drill hole threw bottom of boat and I am NOT going to do that!!!!! Had Lowerance units before and it had a puck that was glued inside of hull and never had a problem with losing depth readings. Does anyone out there have any thoughts or ideas what to do. I like the depth finders but get frustrated with it.

Also what your ideas on which depth finder should be where, Should side imaging be on trolling motor or at console.

Thanks in advance

I personally think you should swap them

i find a lot of stuff approaching and leaving my banks

as for losing reading  in motion

could it be in clean water contact

does the pad of this boat step up at all? I have a feeling that the lower you set the puck  the better it will be

also you need to note rising position and also floating position of this particular rig for angle of puck installed

i have helixs my di reads fair to 35-40 depending a lot on water surfaces  if you want it to read like a flasher at 60-70 better buy a flasher

But shoot this isn't necessary at all

as for gluing transducer down in bilge area  it will work for the 2d sonar but will not work for di with clean images consider these thoughts and move the puck lower and in cleaner water

Dprice you might be right with location I will try and post pictures. 1st picture is where it is located now 2nd picture is where I had it off to the right side and it broke the bracket on first run. Hope you guys understand what I am showing

Looks similar to pad of my boat

I like how you chose to mount it but I definitly see the possible cavitating water problems if this is something you want to work with consider a second shot thru the hull with a switch between the 2 ducers

i have a question for you   How do you like the si  operation on the trolling motor ? As I'm considering running 2 this year

To be truthful with you  I haven't use it much at all. I get on the water and want to fish and not play with the depth finder so I really haven't. I know that sound stupide spend that kind of money and not use it for what you could use it for. I have been going up to the lake some since end of December and I have played with the down imagine a lot and think I have got it lined out where I can see things better. I have a problem read it on the side I guess is my biggest problem I find myself turning my head all the time reading it.

This you tube video will kind of explain why your not getting readings when your speeding up as well as best location to mount. Your boat is probably a little bit different set up than the ones in the video, but I hope it helps. I don't think hitting a wake should have torn off that transducer. Are you certain it wasn't mounted in a location that loading or unloading the boat from the trailer knocked it loose?

Walleyedmike Thanks for the info I will look at into it. I am sure on the mounting cause boat was on the trailer when i mounted it to the boat and it was on the rear step above bottom of boat.

Def. switch the units. Most of the location of fish, brush, humps, etc. is done while sitting at console. At 8mph tells me your ducer is set to high. Have you leveled across from the pad to see where level line is in relation to where ducer is mounted?

Justfishing, your transducer is to high. Hummingbird makes a y cable to hook up a side/down on the outside of the boat and shoot through hull with out using a switch. Si and Di were made for moving. If you have them on the trolling motor every time you move the head you distort the picture. If you want clear image sitting still use 2D or get 360.

Part number for the switch is  (TS3 / 720070-1 )  think you'll like it myself

should cost about 48.00

this will also allow you to run the side image unit on bow  thru the same switch    As for the irregular picture with transducer on rolling motor  a lot of people do this  but they tighten  there cables abit on foot pedal to stiffennit abit

kelly powers did mine  I went to a tournament  the next morning I got to my first stop  and stood on the pedal  and it never budged   Kelly out weighs me a lot    Haha  when he stood on it it moved freely
