A buddy of mine blew his 00 Merc efi 175 over the weekend. He said he has a hole in the block about the size of a 1/2 dollar. He spoke with a guy that says he can weld the hole and sleeve the cylinder (which will take all the combustion pressure) and rebuild with a 1 year warranty. Is this even a possibility? If it is a possibility is it wise? The other question would you have a line on any Merc EFI 175 power heads or a 175 motor? let me know, if you do I will send him your way.

Thank you

A hole in the block means that a connecting rod came loose.  Until it is completely disassembled and inspected nobody can know whether or not the block can be saved, or whether the crankshaft is still good.  If the hole is in the intake (front crankcase) side and the crank is good I have a good crankcase and I have connecting rods.  Actually I have a crankshaft too.   All of which I could sell very reasonably.   Don't attempt to weld it, the semi pourous material that outboard blocks and crankcases are made from don't take welding/brazing very well at all.

No need to sleeve the cylinder unless boring .030+ won't clean up the cylinder damage.

I will tell him. If you get a line on a 175 let me know, his boat is not rated for a 200. Been chasing the green fish? I'm headed up Friday afternoon hoping to get the string stretched. Has the rain added any color? I see its on the way up some hope they let it come up.
