Had a similar experience with lightning when I was younger at Boy Scout summer camp one year. Not many places to go in a thunderstorm except for your tent that is under a canopy of trees at summer camp and a bolt of lightning hit a tree about 50 yards from our camp.  You could actually feel it coming a few seconds before it happened as the hair on your arms stood up and the air actually felt electrified.  Split a tree right down the middle and set it on fire.  They actually had to bring in the fire brigade (which where human pushed pumps that rolled on two big wheels and a spool of fire hose that hooked up to a spigot at the outhouse) to put it out.  Could have been a lot worse.
