trythisonemv Posted September 12, 2017 Posted September 12, 2017 Water is low and clear down there. Had to do a lot of walking to find pools and pockets big enough to stay out of sight. Stealth was entirely the key twos trip. I used ten foot leader with eighteen inch 7x tippet and stood as far from my targets as possible. Sight casting to wild rainbows is a blast and sure made for some challenging casts. Big pools with current were the main hang outs. I would cast the current seams then move on to the edges of the pools as they sweep aroundthe dirt bank. One spot yielded 8 fish on the cricket. Systematically dissected the pool and subsequent riffle making accurate casts where I could see fish. Another pool was filled with roaming trout munching bwo and midges. Tied on a mosquito here and managed a few smaller and then went soft hackle dry fly and wrangled a better one from the outskirts of the pool. There were some bruisers in that pool that took looks but did not commit. Caddis picked up some dinks in the shallow long runs. With the cricket today I had great success. Size ten cricket with size twenty pheasant tail dropper. The dropper was most affective when the cricket got a good drift from run to the eddies of the pools. Also had several nice fish in the stream flats under tree root wads on the cricket. Bounce the cricket off the tree or surrounding bank and fish on. Again long leader and heron like stealth were key. Crane is such a great place to practice patience and the study before casting method. All in all solid day. Few monsters lurking down there that I think will need some evening attention to get on the flyrod....
