Dutch Posted April 11, 2018 Posted April 11, 2018 With warm weather finally here for a bit, my wife has decided that Thursday would be a good day to be out in the boat. I'm trying to come up with a place where we could launch/load and fish with the 40-45 mph wind gusts that are supposed to be here. I'm thinking some where around Big M but I haven't been there in years so I really don't remember much about it. Where do any of you recommend. I'd like to keep her dry and sort of comfortable.
Quillback Posted April 11, 2018 Posted April 11, 2018 Big M launch is in a small cove and unless the wind is downright crazy, it is somewhat sheltered and you shouldn't have wind issues launching/loading. As of yesterday the courtesy dock is useable, but close to the bank as they haven't moved it out with the water level dropping 4 feet in the last week. So come straight in to the dock from the front, there are some rip rap rocks they placed on the side of the ramp this year so watch out for those, it is not much of a problem, but just be aware. Main channel will be white capping in spots, but you can find places that are somewhat sheltered from the wind to fish. Eagle Rock is another option, channel is narrower up there, there can be stretches where even on a windy day it won't be too bad. Don't know what the courtesy dock situation is there.
Members C Beach Posted April 11, 2018 Members Posted April 11, 2018 Sitting here at work pondering do same and burn a couple vaca days tomorrow and Fri and get down there with my wife and Lab. Toiling over how hard the wind will really blow..we usually stay at Schooner and fish from there towards the dam...might be nasty with that south wind. What to do.....
Dutch Posted April 11, 2018 Author Posted April 11, 2018 Thanks Quill. Cape is so close to me that I rarely go over that way and I'm pretty sure I don't want to go below Cape in the James arm.
Dutch Posted April 12, 2018 Author Posted April 12, 2018 I went to Big M today. I did not remember it at all. I struggled to get 6 shorts all of which came on the little guy. Lots of good looking stuff down that way just could not raise a bite on jig, square bill, rock crawler, shakey or spinner bait. Thanks Quill for the heads up on the courtesy dock. Coming in sideways could have caused some serious prop damage. Quillback 1

The lake is so skinny up here, there are always places to hide from the wind and still fish decent locations.

Go to Cape. Put in at Flat Creek or Bridgeport. That area is about to get Real Good. Good Luck !
