I am building a new boat, trying to do it as cheap as I can. I have an '83 80hp merc. I bought new on a small bassboat and it has hardly been used but the boat is mostly gone. Wood floors.  Still I wonder if the motor is good. Was when I parked it 20 yraes ago. Also I have a brand new mini cota trolling motor that was mounted and never used. Hand controlled. Also 2 Lowrance flashers and an x15 graph.

I am looking at Lowe Roughneck 1860sc boats. NO WOOD. Also in BPS they have the Lowrance Hook 5 splitshot for $329 to replace the x15.

So what do you guys think? Will the motor be good? Can I used the new and the old on the same boat? And should I? I think it would be a good enough rig. What do you think?

Lots of parts are NLA on a 1983 80 Merc.

You can get water pump parts, carb and fuel pump kits, and seal kits for the lower unit.   That's about it.

Wrench,  does that also apply to the 1983 115 HP Merc motors?  That's what I've got on my Charger Bass Boat and I have always been a bit concerned about getting parts if I need them.  If I ever hit a log and needed a new lower unit what would be the odds of getting one from a salvage yard?

No problem with gears, shafts, bearings, seals, but if you have a freeze break or an impact that trashes the housing and/or bearing carrier then you're out of luck.  You'll have to find a complete used lower unit.  There's quite a few out there still available.

Carb kits and fuel pump kits are still available, but a common problem with the old inline Merc's is a vacuum leak around the vertical throttle shaft that also causes them to drip raw fuel constantly, the only fix is new carbs....and they are NLA.   Reeds are also NLA.

Ignition parts are NLA for the most part, or so rediculously expensive that nobody wants to go there.
