Randall Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 you know... that looks a lot like a fish that was living in rickett's lake in fayette. bout time you registered on here. Cute animals taste better.
jjtroutbum Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 NICE!!! More info on the set up requested. What fly, depth, technique used. How long was the fight? Did it get ya to the backing? Terry Beeson Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 What are the "specs" on that rod? 5 wt? 8 wt? Cats on a fly rod can be really... REALLY fun... Nice pheesh! snagged in outlet 3 Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 These got into our backing. http://www.ozarkchronicles.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=160 That big one is around four feet long. Plus catfish, drum, gar, buffalo, largemouth and white bass. All on 9 weight fly rods. Hooked some fish so big we had to point the rod at em and break em off on purpose. SIO3.
Kyle Posted May 7, 2007 Author Posted May 7, 2007 JJ I hate to tell you, but I was actually crappie fishing. It hit on a white crappie jig with a pink head floated about 3 1/2 feet deep right after a heavy rain here. I fought him for about 30 to 35 minutes and he got into my backing once (didn't want to muscle him too much with 6 pound leader). I was just trying to hang on and let him get tired. By far the biggest fish I have ever caught on a fly rod and it was a blast. Terry I think it is a 6 weight fly rod, but I am not real sure. It is a Siflex rod from the 60-70's(?)that was my grandfathers. The weight class is worn off. Randall Thanks! and it was actually Sheilds lake.
Randall Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 third lake where we bust the crappies at right? glad to hear at least somebody enjoyed the storm... i know it made my day a lot longer, a lot muddier, and a lot harder. and get an avatar... use that pic with the trout or the one with the hybrids. MOFishwater Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 I managed to catch not only my first cat on the fly, but 7 total for the weekend at my friend's farm in Center, MO. Obviously, there was some food thrown out that stimulated the feeding, I had no real intentions of even going after them, I had a large black bass popper on my rod that I was tossing for the largemouth...great time killer! Let me tell ya, it was a blast! Those cats are a lot smarter than I envisioned. They would check it out everytime I plopped it into the water, you could see the big fish slowly creeping up from below. 99% of the time they'd come RIGHT up to it and flare at the last second and give it a nice tailwhip and boil up the water. It sure was a lot of fun to watch regardless of them taking the popper or not. They seemed to be using their sense of smell/taste more than their vision, many of them would stick their heads up and slowly swim towards it trying to locate it via smell, almost like a carp slurping off the top of the water. Good times, great way to break in my new 8wt rod:) Spent more time messing around with them than the bass! They sure can burn out some line when they finally realize they are hooked! Still looking for that first flyrod card, one of these days...
drew03cmc Posted June 17, 2007 Posted June 17, 2007 That would be a blast. Any way of actually targeting them, or is it most often chance that causes one to hook and catch one on a long rod? Andy
