Michael, I think we are on the same page, but differ about putting the name of the product out in cyber space.

I tend to agree that everything breaks down. Just how fast, it depends on what it is, the elements it is exposed to, and so on. My concern is, if companies are advertising this product as lasting forever, stronger and smaller in diameter, but you have to replace it every other year, is it worth the $13.00 and some change for 25 meters, expecially if you only fish a few times a year. I am sitting here looking at $70.00 worth of product that is useless.

Remind the next time I am in your shop and I will try the Rio. This is one I haven't tried.

Why should I have waited to write my post.

Michael:

I said "I guess I should have waited for your post". I trust and respect your opinion on fishing and the products available to fly fishermen. My post was simply based on an article found in a magazine my someone I don't even know.

If I had seen your post earlier, guess we were writing at the same time, I would not have bothered posting, since your personal experience is way beyond mine. Personal experience often outways a "study" made by whomever.

One thing I have noticed about fluoro on a cold day in the winter I feel it has a tendency to break faster, or it could be my cold fingers............. :cold:

Snow fly sorry I miss read the post

I think that periodicals are a good source of information however one must consider the periodical and take a look at who they or what they promote . Then flip through the periodical and see who the major advertisers are most of the time they will be the same.

I value everyones opinion on this forum that is what makes the forum go around. Rusty I appreciate the fact that you will give someone the time to call and discus the problems with you before you throw them under the bus. I was just personally wanting to know who it was so that I could look at some spools here at the shop to make sure it was not a bad batch that I had. For that fact I'm glad you called me and told me on the phone.

This is one of the best threads that has been on here in a while, the reason I say this I fill that the tippet leader then fly line are the most important thing when fishing. You do not want those three things to come in between you and a fish of a lifetime.

AMEN!!!

There are two types of people. Those who dream dreams and wish, then there are the do'ers. I am a do'er!

I feel like you are daring me to come into your shop and spend a $100 on fluoro.

Randy,

I here congrats are do here a big Toast in your direction.

I would never do that. You know my feeling if you spend nothing or if you spend 10,000 dollars here at the shop you will always get the same advise.

I just hope that everyone feels that it is good advise.

YES I DO!!!

(OK... OK... OK... I know... you do not want a WEAKNESS there to come between you and the fish...)

What we know as "flourocarbon" line/leader/tippet is probably actually made from polytetrafluoroethylene resins or PTFE or similar resins. There are actually eight (8) different polymers that can be called "flourocarbon." I suspect that whichever one is used, it is mixed with "fillers" of some kind.

(The word "Fourocarbon" covers a big family of "stuff" including plastics, refrigerants, propellants in aresol cans, solvents, and even anesthetics. That's right... the stuff they put you to sleep with at the hospital.)

PTFE is better known as "Teflon"... yep... that stuff at the bottom of your frying pan that makes it "non-stick"... You can also compare it to GoreTex, Scotchguard, and a few other known products. As I understand it, it is also one of the coatings used on fly lines.

IF the leader material is a PTFE, then there is a very high resistance to chemicals and a high tolerance to heat and cold - 40 below to about 480 deg F. It is also highly resistant to radiation. Its "cousin" PVF could be the polymer used to make leaders, but it has much the same properties.

I'm not sure what caused the breaks you experienced, but the material is not to blame. There could be some manufacturing defects (voids, bad filler, or other defects) that cause a particular spool, leader, or batch to be "bad" but don't rule out flouro leaders and tippets because of one or two problems.

I received a callback today from the company in question and they are wanting me to return the product for testing purposes. He did ask about where it was stored. Which lends me to believe that a controlled environment is where it needs to be stored. He didn't confirm nor deny when I asked about where I had been storing it for the past six weeks, if that may have been an issue. He is supposed to keep me posted about the testing.
