trying out night fishing on Taneycomo

I am going to try night fishing tonight below the dam on Taneycomo. I have an 8wt and and a sinking line to match I belive that it is a 200 grain sink tip, how does this setup sound. I have heard some people talk about just using a floating line and was wondering if any one had any suggestions. I bass fish a lot and so thats the only flies that I have big bass flies. Will they work some of them are big poppers big clouser and decivers.

I use floating line, but you'll be fine with sinking line. Start off with some sort of white leech, white wooly bugger, white mink, white bunny strip leech, or white zonker. Try both weighted and unweighted. If white does not work and it is foggy, go to red, then purple then grey or olive. Cast across the current and just let it drift, then a few short tugs and a long slow strip, then let it drift again for a few seconds. Use straight 6 or 8 lb test attached to your fly line. No need to bother with a tapered leader or tippet. About 7 to 10 ft of mono should work fine. Dont be afraid to throw big stuff. The rewards could be great. Good luck and say hey to Leonard for me

He must be god the way everyone talks about him.

Thanks for the information do you think that a 250gr sink tip is to much should I go out and buy a floating line.

I'm certainly no expert on night fishing at Taney but an 8 wt seems a bit heavy to me. Whenever I've fished at night I've always used the same 5 wt I use in the daytime. My favorite 5 wt throws the bigger weighted streamers very well. I could probably see the benefit of a 6 wt at night but an 8 seems like overkill to me. Not nearly all the fish you catch at night are monsters and the average sized fish is a lot more fun in my opinion on a lighter rod.

But like I said I'm far from an expert on the night fishing thing.

Greg,

I think you'd have a little trouble throwing the 6" fly that I was throwing on a 5 wt. An 8 wt was perfect for that. I usually use a 6 wt at night unless its Fall or I'm throwing really big stuff.

You're right. I think a 6" fly would be way beyond my 5 wts capabilities. I've never tried to throw anything that big. The biggest fly I've ever thrown for trout is a #4. And I usually don't ever go above a #8. But I don't pretend to be an expert at night fishing or even streamer fishing. I fish nymphs 90% of the time. But I'm planning to expand my horizons and throw more streamers and soft hackles this year as well as fish a little more at night.
