SilverMallard Posted June 4, 2007 Posted June 4, 2007 Bill, I know you do a LOT of good with a LITTLE around here and I respect the heck out of you. So don't take this the wrong way. But you made a good point and then didn't illustrate it. You said that ALL of our "charity" is mostly double-edged: wanting to do some good AND get some benefit at the same time. I agree. When you "donated" those stumps and brush from the land you cleared to build YOUR business, that was TRASH that was going to cost you money to dispose of for the most part...right? Or did you have a timber buyer lined up with a cash offer in hand for the 20% usable material who was going to clear the 80% for you as part of the deal? I FOR SURE think you should have been acknowledged along with Bass Pro. That's the media's fault...and PR people from MDC's fault. But you made a darned good point about altruism: it is actually EXTREMELY rare. When most humans choose to do "good," we choose to do it because we can accomplish our PERSONAL goals by doing so AND maybe help someone else without too much sacrifice. It matters not whether you're rich or poor. What happens...and what you are alluding to in all of this...is that other "little people" like the folks at MDC and the USACE "suck up" to these big shots and make most of the errors when they do - like when you got dissed and Johnny got all the credit, and when they never even bothered to do anything but say "No problem, Branson Landing, we'll drain the upper end of the lake for you!" Everybody wants something. Everybody is working some angle or another. And companies like Herschend Family Entertainment, HCW, and Bass Pro Shops are seen as the kinds of folks you do "favors" for hoping someday it may come back to you. Finally, Johnny Morris built Bass Pro Shops from a mom-n-pop bait and tackle shop on Hwy 13 that was only a small corner of a gas station. He is a "super successful" mom-n-pop sporting goods store owner. So at what point to we wish Chuck Gries, Phil Lilley, Bill Babler, or Stan and Carolyn Parker LESS success? At what point to do we turn against THEM out of petty jealousy? I actually heard some of that sort of hatefulness and small-minded sour grapes when Stan and Carolyn recently won the Orvis Fly-fishing Outfitter of the Year award. And that sort of crap makes me sick. SilverMallard "How little do my countrymen know what precious blessings they are in possession of - and which no other people on Earth enjoy." duckydoty Posted June 4, 2007 Posted June 4, 2007 Not all of us have alternative motives in mind when we go out of our way for charity or to help another human out. I volunteered to help clean up Hickory Creek this year--What could my alternate motive be for busting my @$$ for 12 hours---It surely wasnt to be able to fish a cleaned up Hickory Creek because I for danged sure wouldn't drive that far to fish for trout when I can go to Taney. What is the alternative motive for setting people up for trout fishing down a Taney when I find out they are from out of town and never caught a trout before??? Is it just so I can spend another $4.00 on the tapered leader that I gave them and another $20.00 on the 12-18 fly assortment I gave them so they might have a little success. I dont think so. It is just to help someone out. Well, you could be right ----- Getting a Thank You has always been worth it! duckydoty A Little Rain Won't Hurt Them Fish.....They're Already Wet!! Bill Babler Posted June 4, 2007 Author Posted June 4, 2007 Love the way you look at things. Only bad part about my stumps is that we had already buried them and smoothed the landscape before MDC asked for em. We had to dig the rascuels back up to give to them. They did regrade the area though, at no cost to me. The question, is how can we stop a repeat preformance of this? I could give a flying heck about how much money anyone makes, I just don't want to see our fishery damaged like this again. http://whiteriveroutfitters.com http://whiteriverlodgebb.com
SilverMallard Posted June 4, 2007 Posted June 4, 2007 Ah, day late and a dollar short! Let's here it for the gov't! LOL If we don't follow the money, Bill, there's no way to prevent a recurrance. A decision like that is ALL ABOUT $$$! We will have to take that into account in any meaningful plan to stop it from happening again. What we have to do is find win-win solutions for businesses and the environment. That is our ONLY real choice. Everything else leads to train-wrecks brought about by the law of unintended consequences. This is why the adversarial mentality (us vs. them) is so poisonous. In fact, it may be more poisonous to the future of our environment than those septic tanks and chicken farms! Not all of us have alternative motives in mind when we go out of our way for charity or to help another human out. Well, you could be right ----- Getting a Thank You has always been worth it! duckydoty I rest my case! LOL Maybe you wanted the exercise, to hang out with friends, or to demostrate to your kids the concept of "good citizenship." I have no idea. Maybe it just made you FEEL BETTER ABOUT YOURSELF to think you did something good for someone that you would not directly benefit from. Even if feeling better about one's self is the ONLY personal goal, it is still something we do for OURSELVES. Like I said, true altruism (doing a thing for ZERO personal gain and 100% personal sacrifice) is VERY, VERY rare. I'm not even sure it actually exists. There is a rumor that the son of carpenter over in Palestine did it once upon a time. Other than that, I think we're all selfish and that all of our 'good works' are as filthy rags. taxidermist Posted June 4, 2007 Posted June 4, 2007 Johnny started by selling his hand cast plastic lures to shops personally when he was in high school. So MDOT can put in bridge piers without draining taneycomo but the landing people cant. Seems like somewhere there should have been an enviromental impact study done on the draining. Event hough its privatly owned the public use and damage to the flora and fauna should have been studied. regardless of who is building what. Point to start investigating would be the Ark. Game and Fish as they drain Lake Conway every few years. I am sure they could steer someone in the right direction. So how has this effected the fish bite from fall creek down?
SilverMallard Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 What he did as a KID in school is hardly relevant. If we look at things that way, you can change that two decades I mentioned in the PM I sent you to 3 decades because my first outdoors "job" was as an asst. trip guide for large group backpacking, mountaineering, and white water canoeing trips when I was 16. And now I'm going to say it in public: I did nothing but disagree with your "junk" comment about all BPS merchandise. I did NOT attack you in public. And I'm not going to now. SOME of us around here care more about preserving and improving the natural resources, environment, and our sports than we do about this kind of crap. From Retail Traffic Magazine - "In 1975, Morris established American Rod & Gun, a wholesale company serving independent sporting goods retailers. More than 7,000 sporting goods stores in the United States and several foreign countries now stock Bass Pro Shops products." So you are quite right. You can buy that same "junk" anywhere...almost EVERYWHERE. gonefishin Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 Silvermallard, I'm not sure who you are and I'm sure you do not know who I am but after reading a few of you post and the post that you have put on here to like the last one. I would have to think that you might have some ties to some money. From the way that you sure stick up for the big boys. You make yourself seem like an athority and after a search I find nothing that says what your athority figure comes from. You always have an oppinion and it seems that you have to be right or it's the highway. I know that you type LOL after your last post but I think that you truely belive that you are above some of us on this forum. I for one don't care for it. Ahhh It ain't no problem lbt. Everyone understands SM and Superiority Complex seem to go hand in hand. SM seems to enjoy singling my posts out. Which he has a right to do but, like I said before I never mentioned Johnny Morris or Bass Pro. I made a general observation about over successful people to which he took exception. He says he is quoting me when he said 'Every successful person' when anyone can read the post and see what I said. I didnt want to start an argument. Anyone can read the posts and see SM is the one who is pugilistic. I was doing no more than BB and venting at what was done to Taney. SM decided to single me out about it thats all. I am through posting on this topic. I would rather be fishin'. "Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote." Thom Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 I have been out of town for a while but it is good to see as I return to the forum that all of you guys are still wrong about most things as I usually am but SM in his infinite wisdom will straighen you out if you are just wise enough to listen to his authorative infinite knowledge. So shape up. OK I've got the red target on my computer back .... so shoot SM My turn. Thom Harvengt
