Hoping this will bring the Vanish thread back to the top.

So does anyone have any opinions to add after using it for a while?

I tried to find some 4# test today at the Supercenter in Mt. Home but they only have 4# in the colored material which was almost twice as expensive as the 6# clear. FWIW, I miked the 6# and it is the .009" as advertised on the packaging.

Glad you did, CC... I've heard good things about Vanish, but never tried it. I might tie some of my own leaders as well if it looks that good.

Tom, I was a failure in math...so what is the 6lb vanish comparable to in fly speak...about 3x?

Subtract the diameter in thousandths from 11 to arrive at the 'X' rating. So .009 = 2X

Works the same way with any size.i.e., .005 = 6X

I have used the Vanish #6 (2x), #4 (4x), #2 (5x) for tippet for a few years. #6 & #4 for night wooly buggers and #2 during the day. The #2 is 5x and is understated as #2 test line. It's closer to #4. Those 110 yard spools are economical. I think Phil carries it. I can go down to size 16 hooks on the 5x during the day. If I go a smaller fly, I'll add a 6x tippet to the 5x. If I get a lot of refusals on a fly like a crackelback, then I will also add 6x to the 5x. Usually when I use 6x and with a crackelback, the trout hit it so hard they can snap off the tippet without me lifting the rod, so I try 5x as long as I can. If you see the refusals, then that kind of forces you to make some kind of change. The Vanish material seems to join well to your leader or other Vanish in your tippet with just a double surgeons knot. I use the basic clinch knot for my fly and again it holds well.

The thing to remember with any leader material, mono or flurocarbon, is to be real careful taking it off the spool so that you don't nick it or stretch it. The sides of the spools, even on expensive line, can have burrs on them that can nick your line. Or there's too much friction with the retaining elastic band.

I've been using Vanish 2# for the last 2 years on my full sink stripping rod. I mainly fish BIG crackles and woolies with it. Like Dave Cook said; sometimes they hit it so hard they snap it off. If I see that they are rising and refusing on the drift before they sink, then I will change but for the most part it's Vanish all the way!

Thank you Dave Cook & brittsnbirds! That is exactly the sort of feedback I hoped would surface when I reactivated the thread. I'll feel a lot better informed about using Vanish now if I can only find the 2# & 4# in my area. CC

What? They don't have it at the Thayer WalMart? Of course a better chance at the Ash Flat SuperCenter....

Both Thayer & Mt. Home have the colored version in a 4# but the smallest they have in clear is the 6. Ash Flat is next on my list to check.

Dunno why the colored version is almost twice as expensive as the clear. :o

The "color" version is suppose to vanish underwater, but be visible to the fisherman out of the water. The colorant makes the cost of manufacturing about 2 cents per 10,000 ft higher and therefore twice as expensive on the shelf....
