Black Bear???

Its not just a chance encounter. MDC released this last week, 500 are in state. I have seen tracks years ago on 11pt. One was hit by a car last summer here in Jackson. I think they traded turkeys for them. They also fess up to the fact that otters are becoming a problem in their monthly magazine this month!

We got us a black bear here at Roaring River this summer, it destroyed two of my neighbors bee hives last week. He put some electric fence up trying to save the last hive, so far the bear has not been back, or at least not past the fence

SHHHhhhhhh. Dont get em started. I mentioned otters being a problem about a year ago. Seems a lot of people took exception.

With MDC calling for bear proof food containers and pet, livestock feed storage, bears must be becoming a nuiasance somewhere. I was surprised about the one here in a residential area away from any large tract of wild timber. There have been other sightings locally since. Like most other wildlife, they keep to themselves and stay out of sight. One was shot last summer in a neighboring county while raiding a feed house and threatening a dog. I have seen tracks on the upper current river, 11 pt, and our farm in Wayne county. If we get a few more, maybe we can have an open season.

As far as the otters, the article states that it sounded like a good idea when they introduced them but they may be getting out of hand. I had a family of them pass through at Wappappello Lake last duck season in flooded timber while I was floating in my kayak. 2 of them pulled a large carp onto a log and started feeding on it.

I'm surprised there are not more in SW MO. Arkansas (once known as "The Bear State" at one time) brought them back a few years ago and they have done well. There is now a season on them. I've encountered a few while deer and turkey hunting. One time in particular, I was on a deer stand and my buddy was about 400 yards west of me. The truck was parked at the edge of a food plot about 200 yards east of me. I heard "a woman talking" and getting closer finally realizing it was a bear. A few minutes later, I heard the truck door slam shut. Then a few minutes later, the momma bear crossed in front of me about 60 yards on the other side of the small pond I was watching. Then, a bit later, the truck horn began to sound...

I got up, walked to the truck, and my bud was sitting in the truck wondering if the bear had eaten me... He heard her coming his way, made his way back to the truck, and wouldn't get out. I laughed, but he told me he didn't want NO part of NO bear!!!

Another time, I was walking through some woods and smelled that "bear" smell. Once you smell it, it's hard to forget. I stopped, looked around for a long time, finally spotted the bear moving away from me about 75 yards or so ahead, and quietly made my way in the opposite direction.

If you chance seeing one and can observe from a distance through field glasses (and from the cab of your truck) they are pretty neat to watch.

But I've never had one help me launch a drift boat!!! like Phil has...

For the most part, the black bears around the Ozarks are harmless if you leave them alone and stay away from them. But if you see cubs, GET THE HECK OUTTA THERE!!! Mommas are VERY protective...

I reckon in the future we will have to start carrying a gun when fishing to protect ourselves from the local wildlife.
