skeeter Posted June 20, 2007 Posted June 20, 2007 I keep trying all kinds of feeders for hummers but I cant keep the ants out of them. Any idea's? Kinda' depends on where the ants are gaining access from...I had them climbing up a one story high deck post to get to a feeder hung underneath an overhanging soffit. Put a stop to them by spreading Ortho's dry granular lawn insecticide heavily around the perimeter of the post where it contacted the ground and they croaked trying to cross the insecticide. Suggest you backtrack where the little buggers are coming from and attack them where they're coming off the ground. My problem this year has been the House Finches. Smart little devils figured out the nectar was good stuff when I used to leave one bee-guard out so the Baltimore Orioles could get to it. Had to replace the bee-guard due to first one and now six House finches slurping at the hummingbird feeder. Darn finches are notoriously aggressive at feeders and don't want them running off the hummers ( if they ever return from wherever ! ). Next thing they'll learn how to yank out the bee-guard and then it's gonna' be BB gun time !
Terry Beeson Posted June 20, 2007 Posted June 20, 2007 Geez, guys... ants, finches, and bees need "love" and nectar too, ya know... Let's see... maybe you could stand guard with a BB gun and shoot any ants that crawl to the feeder... Or maybe you could figger out how those magician fellers make them purty young assistants levitate in mid-air and do the same with your feeders... Or... use the Ortho... Wayne SW/MO Posted June 20, 2007 Posted June 20, 2007 I had another thought this morning when I was out with the dog, my place has been surrounded by wild flowers, including some semi wild ones. The rain has caused an explosion in flowers around here, so maybe they just have lots of food to choose from. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Chief Grey Bear Posted June 20, 2007 Posted June 20, 2007 I keep trying all kinds of feeders for hummers but I cant keep the ants out of them. Any idea's? They make a thing that hangs from your hanger and then the feeder hangs from it. You fill it with water and the ants stay out. I forget the name of it but its not very big, maybe 2 or 3 inches long and holds about a 1/4 cup of water or so. Works like a charm. You should be able to get them at the farm store or walmart. jdmidwest Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 The Hummingbirds always disappear for a few weeks in the month of June, I assume to raise their young. Only a few males will use the feeders. After the fourth of July, things should pick back up. Smear vasoline thick around the stem of the hanger or pole to keep ants out of the feeders. The ants won't go thru it. Chief Grey Bear Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 good idea but there is a problem. Since they decided that the MO Wildlife Code is a permissive code you are not allowed to kill anything if there isn't a specific listing for it in the code. It has bee a few years ago but I knew some people who were fined and their shotguns confiscated for shooting them. According to the agent there is no season or limit on them therefore they cannot be killed even if they are a nuisance. I don't know if the code has changed since then. I got my response today. Here it is copy and pasted from my email. Hi, You are correct. Starlings are not protected by the feds or state. You can shoot, trap, poison, etc. them in any numbers at any time. If there is any truth to the story it might be that they were discharging firearms in a restricted area or more likely they killing other protected species as well. They were not fined for killing starlings. Happy shooting!
