They have turned fishing and hunting into a huge profit big business. Gotta replace all that lost revenue from the postal service somehow. I would rather be fishin'. Gavin Posted June 25, 2007 Posted June 25, 2007 Yep, MDC has a lot of money on hand..Interest earned on cash reserves doesnt have anything to do with amount of your permit fees though. MDC has a big budget and they need a lot of cash in the bank to make payroll and pay bills. Their annual budget is around $160M a year, so I'd imagine that they would have at least $20-50M in the bank at all times. And FWIW,,,Hunting and Fishing permits only provide $28M of their $160M budget...Their cash cow is the 1/8cent sales tax that provides them with 100M per year. If their primary support was from permit and user fees, we'd be paying a lot more. Cheers.
Wayne SW/MO Posted June 25, 2007 Posted June 25, 2007 They also need capital in order to take advantage of land sales. Stocking what? They can only put Trout in so many places. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
brownieman Posted June 29, 2007 Posted June 29, 2007 I've been told (don't know if there is any truth to it, stricktly hearsay)The MDC can make fly sh(t look like pepper on the books. They are excellent at making it look good to the public where our tax dollars go...best tools are the Consy Magazine and the Urban Nature Centers. They cater to where the majority of the vote is...this is where they try to show their money off to appease the public. If any native Mo. species of flora or fauna is deemed endangered and put on the list they create task forces, meet, study...over meet, over study...not at Econo Lodges either I speculate...use every tool at their disposal...best tax dollars can buy...and ensure to the public all efforts possible are being made to save this species. My opinion...if it's endangered, they will study it till it's extinct, lol My friends say I'm a douche bag ?? Avatar...mister brownie bm <><

Aren't there fish other than trout the MDC could spend a little money on stocking or is it that they just want to spend money on the big money earners. I would rather be fishin'. Dutch Posted June 29, 2007 Posted June 29, 2007 They stock walleye, hybrids, and muskie to name a few other groups.
brownieman Posted June 29, 2007 Posted June 29, 2007 You're right dutch...most these warmwater species are stocked at a very small size...pretty much forage, 2 to 4" Probably not 5% of that size walleye reach adulthood. According to stats, channel cats are the number 1 sought after fish in Mo. and are stocked in lakes statewide with some size to them cause they can be raised with fish food. The other fish you mention have to be fed live food...once they get past the plankton stage of growth they get expensive to raise...have to be fed minnows. Heck...no more money than they have, they can't afford that, lol I bet a few "certain people" have lakes with some good size fish in em. My friends say I'm a douche bag ?? gonefishin Posted June 29, 2007 Posted June 29, 2007 I realize they stock other species. I was being sarcastic hence the silly icon however, there is no where the bucks spent on other fish as there are on Trout, but then most catfishermen don't buy $1000+ fishing rods or $30,000+ bass boats, so they don't generate near the sales or income tax for the MDC/State as other fish do. You are right catfish are the number one pursued fish in MO but you couldn't tell it by the amount of bucks spent on them. I would rather be fishin'. brownieman Posted June 29, 2007 Posted June 29, 2007 I agree Bud...but I have seen lots of these cat fisherman that fish behind Truman dam spend over $600 and the same for a reel to land these huge flatheads and blues...custom built hybrid rods and tackle, etc. There is more money spent on rearing trout than any other species due to the money generated by the trout parks, daily tags, trout permit fees etc. Trout fishing is a good source of revenue...big bucks.
