Seth Posted January 22, 2006 Posted January 22, 2006 Four of us went and we got 80 fish. We killed a a bunch of buffalo, drum, common carp, redhorse, one big head carp and one grass carp. We killed a bunch of sucker/carp looking fish too, not sure exactly what they are. We got into schools of the big heads right underneath the bridge. Down river where it is a big shallow riffle, we did the best on the redhorse and buffalo. Seen two nice walleyes while gigging too. Both probably 4-5 lbs. The paddlefish were everywhere above the bridge. They were in big schools and the boat would go right over them and you could see them swimming with there mouths wide open, it was pretty neat. It was a blast and I took a pic of the mess of fish and the two biggest ones we got.
Fish Bork Posted January 22, 2006 Posted January 22, 2006 Were there heads kind of triangle shaped and have a marbled color? If so they were Northern Hog Suckers. But looking through your pics I couldn't see any. Got any pics and I can tell you what they are. Chris Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted January 22, 2006 Root Admin Posted January 22, 2006 What do you do with this many fish? Can them? Pickle them? Big fish fry? I've heard they're not good after being frozen.

Seth: Thats a nice mess of fish. Looks like I oughta be fishin with you. Phil: My opinion: They are alright fried but it is best to score them first. Problem is to score them you have to leave the skin on and so the red meat can't be trimmed off. Like most fish the red meat is strong tasting. Trout are no exception, true Trout don't have a lot of red meat but if you trim it off they have a much improved flavor. I think Sucker are better canned because they can be filleted, skinned and the red meat trimmed. Prepared this way they make right tasty patties, chowders or fish soups. I have tried them after they have been frozen and found I did not like them at all. Freezing makes the meat mushy ans gives it an off flavor. Bud I would rather be fishin'. Seth Posted January 23, 2006 Author Posted January 23, 2006 No, they arent North Hog Suckers or "hog mollies" as we call them. We only killed one of those. Did not see many of them either for that fact. Phil....we ate a mess of them tonight deep fried in Andy fish batter with some fries and tader tots. We got a lot of people we know that want a mess of fish so they will all get ate. I am sure there are many different ways of eating these fish, but all we ever do is fry them. Just fillet them out, cut out the red meat, and then score them up nice and good and then fry them nice and crispy. They are definetly better if you eat them before freezing them. Fish never taste as good after they have been frozen.
Fish Bork Posted January 25, 2006 Posted January 25, 2006 O.K. just got on here and had another guess at the mystery fish. Maybe you have two types of Buffalo Bigmouth and Smallmouth. Bigmouth Buffalo have an oblique mouth meaning it is straight across not facing up or down. Smallmouth Buffalo have a downturned mouth. Man this is bugging me not knowing what kind of fish those were Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.
Seth Posted January 25, 2006 Author Posted January 25, 2006 Which fish are you talking about? Are you talking about that bighead carp in the picture with the big mouth and the eyes even with its mouth?????? I think we got only smallmouth buffalo, but I did not look very good.
Fish Bork Posted January 25, 2006 Posted January 25, 2006 Nah I saw your big head and grass carp in the picture but was trying to figure out your mystery fish. Buffalo have a dorsal fin a lot like carp. Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.
