Ok with the price of Gas I'm considering getting rid of my Boat.I use it alot for snagging for Bills in the Spring.

So what I was wondering I went bought a couple of Surf Rods.Would these be better than a Snagging Rod from the bank?

The Guy I bought them from said some Guys prefer the Surf Rods.

oneshot,

don't see where it would make much difference myself.

imo you just need a rod that when you lay the meat to it will bend without breaking and at the same time have the backbone to horse one in.

cheap rod..expensive rod...just personal preference.

I have a 7' muskie rod...pretty darn stiff...i use it most of the time for just about everything except distant.

I have a 10' offshore rod that will sling quite a bit farther, and a 13' rod that will out distance it by a little...don't think i've ever hooked anything with the 7 footer, big blues, flatheads, hybrids, spoonys, whatever that i have not been able to turn before they spool me...if they do that they deserve to win the battle, lol

helpful i hope...bm

My friends say I'm a douche bag ??

I have a 12 foot extra heavy action surf rod with a big Southbend Hurricane reel spooled with 80 pound Power Pro that I use for snagging. It's great if you do alot of casting. The only thing you might like to do is to shorten the butt end of the rod a bit because it's usually a bit too long to hold comfortably.

Some people might think it is too much for a boat rod, but me and two other guys use the same setup and snag at the same time. We usually troll and cast though, almost like bass fishing. Catch lots of bills that way though, especially when the trollers aren't getting anything.

You can go buy all the rods you want (I did too!), all's I'm a going to tell you is, get you a Penn 320gti (or 310gti) coupled up with an Ugly Stick Tiger Rod (the yellow Ugly Sticks). I use the 7' and 7 1/2' (heavy and medium heavy) and you are going to love it! They cast a country mile and still have enough butt to horse in the hogs in the current off those muddy banks!! Good luck!

WHEN WE USED TO GRAB FORE SPOONBILL WE JUST USED OUR 5 FOOT SUCKER RODS WITH AMBASDER 5000 AND 30 LBS TEST. JUST HAD THE DRAG SET LIGHT. PEOPLE MADE FUN OF US BUT WE HAD AS MANY FISH ON THE BANK AS THE REST, AND THE SMALLER ROD DIDNT WARE YOU OUT THROING IT. ONE THING WE NEVER DID CATCH ANY OVER ABOUT 65 LBS SO I DONT KNOW IF OUR LITTLE SUCKER RODS WOULD HOLD UP TO A BIG FISH. SLIDER

DONT EVER GIVE UP MOSES WAS A BASKET CASE ONCE!

You don't have to have an extremely heavy setup to catch paddlefish like most thing. Last year I broke out my 10' medium action surf that was spooled with 20 lbs test for the heck of it and landed a 50 pounder. It was like ultralight snagging for paddlefish LOL.

The only problem with lighter setups is hook penetration sometimes isn't as good as you would like.

Glad to see you back in business on here Duckman. I figured you would be showing up shortly with paddlefish season on the horizon. :goodjob:

Good to see ya here to Seth. Boy we sure got a gully washer last night! One thing for sure it is going to stir them spoonies up from the bottom, bad thing is, it is about to flood out where we usually camp on the opener @ Schell. So, we'll just have to wait and see what happens here in the next week! Will be posting more here the week after opener! Hope to see some of ya fellers down around Schell, Taberville, Montigaw, Virginia, etc.... this season. As always, I'll have a cold'en or two waiting for ya just look for the little white camper with a blue stripe around the middle.

Man I have said it the past two years about coming up there and I just haven't done it yet. I always end up heading down to the Tablerock to snag. A buddy of mine and I are going to try fishing those spoonbill tourneys on Lake of the Ozarks held by The Old Oar House Inn and Snagmasters this year. We've never snagged up on LoZ before so it will be a new experience for us. We tear the paddlefish up down on Tablerock so maybe we can do the same on LoZ. ^_^

Well time to get back to wrapping the new rod guides on my surf rod....

Ok since I first posted this I got rid of my Boat and bought a Bigger one.So it will be business as usual.

Got a question though.I have a place at Warsaw but we usually go to Osceola to start the season.Which is what we will do this year. But later on we was talking about going below 65 HWY because it is closer. How far down is the Old Oar House? Just never been down that way, looks like a fun place.Oh aqnd how do you get to it by road?
