Members MoMuskies Posted August 12, 2007 Author Members Posted August 12, 2007 Thanks for the feedback! After 26 years of marriage and fishing for muskies longer than that, my wife is hoping that I find another fishing passion that is not so tackle extensive (musky gear takes up quite a large section of the garage). after reading the above, I can see that I'm going to need additional tackle storage devices for the trout gear. At least the lures are smaller than musky gear! Thanks again... PS - how do fish a soft hackle?
Leonard Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 sorry... my fingers go faster then my thoughts... what I meant to say: If you try to load a box with just lures.. youd have close to 100 of them... you need deep runners, husky jerks, countdowns, floaters, and alot more... then the colors.. so many colors to choose from you would really have to have a lot of rapalas to cover it all.. http://www.taneycomonights.com
Danoinark Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 Momuskie I fish soft hackles primarily two ways. For me the most effective is what is called on the swing. Cast the fly up stream 1/4, I then strip it quickly to get it below the surface film, I mend upstream to help get the bug down then as the fly passes me I allow the line to belly downstream in what would be an unnatural drift. As the flyline straightens down stream the soft hackle begins to rise just like an emerger surfacing. This is where you will get violent strikes and all that is necessary is just a slight lifting of the rod. If you don't get a strike, then keep the fly hanging in the current for a few seconds. I typically just count to ten. If I still don't get a hit, I begin a slow, strip, strip, strip, pause, strip, strip, strip, pause until the next cast. If no fish are interested, I will move downstream about three yards and repeat the process. Try to get the fly to emerge just in front of the feeding pod. Another way I fish them, especailly on windy days, is to cast upstream a quarter, then strip the fly under the film, then begin the slow, short, strip, strip, strip, pause, etc. Soft Hackles can also just be fished dead drift. I seldom will use an indicator while fishing soft hackles. Dano Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"
Zach Bearden Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 A soft hackle under an indicator? Like dead drifting or swinging it? If you were swinging it wouldnt an indicator create a wake and put the fish down? "Its clearly Bree time baby!" Member: 2009 U.S. Youth Fly-Fishing Team. If you were swinging it wouldnt an indicator create a wake and put the fish down? I would never use an indicator when swinging a soft hackle fly. And your thoughts on that would be a very good reason not to. I sometimes will fish a traditional soft hackle as a dry. Its a very versatile bug for fishing the entire water column. brownieman Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 gotcha leanard, you're right...whatever the water you have to put it in front of em. i think often times if they're not hungry they'll fight it if they won't eat it...the big brownies are pretty territorial. i know on several occasions this has been the case with me...could tell they weren't in a feeding mode but they don't like that plug...so let the fightin begin, lol. bm My friends say I'm a douche bag ??
