mic Posted September 11, 2022 Posted September 11, 2022 I went to Meramec Springs, but it was free ladies day so I turned around and went to my old favorite BSC. I'm trying to learn how to fish with a tenkara rod. A couple of weeks ago, I had my best day ever at Montauk with it. However, BSC is so small and thick, and I wasn't sure how a eleven or thirteen foot rod would work. I took it in, but had my trusty three weight in the backpack. I found the tenkara works very well mainly because the soft tip made bow and arrow casting a breeze, but you could stay back. On the way back down, I also found it was easier to swing a fly across a five foot wide creek. The long rod allowed me to stay way back, but controlling that small width was easier. Not including the a very rare day where the fish were literally jumping out of the creek and hit anything, this was my best nymph day. I fished the red gate up to the private land. I landed four or five and released a nice six incher. I lost probably an eight inch fish on my way back down swinging my first attempt at the Tenkara style fly. I had a knot gave out on me, but I knew it was weakened. However, I told myself it would be ok "for the size of fish here". Famous last words. All and all, I had a great day for that small section of the creek. I talked to a gent at the bridge, and he got skunked. LOL, was it the rod or stream section. Either way, I had not been there for many years. BCS really is not for everyone, but for me, a great creek and very pretty. Another fun item... I also started up again on tying. I made four flies to try out and caught fish on all four. #16 Prince Nymph #Harvest midge - found this fly on the Springfield club site: http://www.mtfa-springfield.org/resources/fly-tying-recipes-patterns/harvester-midge/. I didn't have the rusty color so I just used black and silver. The tier reported a hundred fish day with it. I'm curious with this on a 16 and the very small thread body, can it replace an 22 midge. My eyes are not getting younger. #Generic tenkara fly - 14 hook; grizzly hackle (oversized), red head, black dubbing body, and silver wire. It was sort of like this: https://www.fliesonline.co.uk/trout-flies/tenkara-flies/grizzly-oki-kebari/ style wise. The Mistake - LOL, I tied a harvest midge with holographic body and silver wire. However, I tried to add a touch of UV epoxy, but ended up covering the whole (small) body. However, it looked fishy so I kept it. It pulled out the first fish, but lost it to an underwater limb. I'm going to tie up some more. Sorry no pics, for me... it is still warm out. so I dehooked and released immediately. Tight lines nomolites 1
