Members Firefish Posted August 23, 2007 Members Posted August 23, 2007 If you had to pick one week in the fall for big browns, which one would it be? I looked through the archives, and last year it looked like early November was prime time. Would that be a good bet most years, or should I move it up a little? I've fished Taney a lot in the spring and summer, but I haven't been able to make it up for the fall, so I'm looking forward to it.
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted August 23, 2007 Root Admin Posted August 23, 2007 I would say that's prime. I like later in Novmeber and even December. Less crowds, still a few browns around and great rainbows.
DeepDiver75 Posted August 23, 2007 Posted August 23, 2007 Last year I had a great 3 day trip the last week of October. Lots of browns up top at that time. Like Lilley said later on about December you still have a few big browns hanging around and if things go right the rainbows are starting to stage for their spawn later in the early spring. There's just no bad time to fish Taney as long as the weather and the SWPA will cooperate.
Members MoMuskies Posted August 23, 2007 Members Posted August 23, 2007 What should one be throwing in the trophy area at that time of the year - either spin casting or with the fly rod? Thanks
loo10 Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 A great way to gather that info is looking thru the postings in the archives. There's oodles & gobs of great information that alot of people have been willing to share over the years. It's always fun to dig a little and come up with a "pearl of wisdom" that many might have forgotten. Good luck. loo10 Rich Looten Springfield, Missouri "If people don't occasionally walk away from you shaking their heads, you're doing something wrong."- John Gierach
Members Firefish Posted August 24, 2007 Author Members Posted August 24, 2007 Thanks for the info. I'll be needing a place to spend a few nights, so I'll be giving you a call Phill. I'll also be hunting down some of those Pine Squirrel Sculpins I've been reading so much about.
Terry Beeson Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 Uh... the fish never bite on Taney between October and December... Yeah... that's it... that's the ticket... they never bite... and the pine squirrel sculpin scares the trout away and attracts the Taneycomo Squid... yeah... the squid... that's it... that's the ticket... Nobody go fishing in Taney during October and November... The wicked witch of the Rebar will get you, my pretty... AND YOUR LITTLE DOG, TOO!!!! Just ask the great and powerful Wizard of Taney.... He'll tell ya... OK... OK... OK... Seriously... Here's the deal. I will start working full time while going to school full time on October 29th. I predict that since this will greatly hamper my ability to fish Taney, on that day the big browns will begin to gobble up flies all over the area between Outlet 1 and Big Hole... The brown "run" does seem to mirror very close the rut of the Whitetail deer... So early November is a good bet... Seth Posted August 25, 2007 Posted August 25, 2007 The brown "run" does seem to mirror very close the rut of the Whitetail deer... So early November is a good bet... That's the only thing I hate about the brown run is that it is the best when the bucks are going crazy also. I spent all last year trying to bag me a big ol buck and never even made it down there to chase browns. That's not going to happen though this year because I am taking a whole week off to do nothing but chase bucks and browns.
