Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted September 1, 2007 Root Admin Posted September 1, 2007 Fishing the chute in this manner does not require much talent as a flyfisherman. You've just describe a bunch of anglers who fish Taney... although you, and I have to admit- myself- don't really care for fishing the outlets, I don't think anyone should think less of them. Not saying Jim is at all... but it's easy to fall into that mindset. I'm not coming to defend Leonard- he can stand all by himself. And like I said- IF ANYONE, guide or not, does anything on Taney that's questionable- there's too many people (witnesses) who fish up there not to be noticed AND alot of those people read and post on this forum. BUT POSTERS WHO PICK--- cast on if you have a perfect record. Note: I don't cast much cause I've been forgiven of very much. Jim- hope you don't take my post in a negative light to your post. You're not the first person to point out how Leonard fishes. I will say, it's not the only way he fishes, though. At some point, we need to leave Mr. Keeney alone on this subject. Not sure if any guide has been raked over the coals like Leonard has here. There are pro and there will be con- always will.
Fishhand Posted September 1, 2007 Posted September 1, 2007 QUOTE "Fishing the chute in this manner does not require much talent as a flyfisherman." That was my quote and I still don't think it takes much talent to flyfish the chutes at Taney. However, I don't think any less of anyone who fishes the chute. It's how I began flyfishing and probably how the majority of people who flyfish Taney began flyfishing. I just think, if posts are presented in a misleading manner, then someone whose been down there and seen what happens needs to express their personal opinion about such matters. Let the person whose presenting the posts in question defend themselves. I know this is a social websight, and I probably shouldn't have said anything at all, but, it irked me to read Leonard's posts.
Leonard Posted September 1, 2007 Posted September 1, 2007 when you seen me fishing the chutes... how many other people are there?? I fish the chutes if there is barely anyone there or high water.. we all know that alot of fisherman heads for the chuts first thing.. the reason are the fish are "easy pickings"... But 1 thing you probably dont see me do is fish a scud in the chute (during the day)... If the water is high at night I will fish a scud... want to know what Im doing... Im watching the reaction to the fish to flies... Like this strip leech Ive been using.. I know what it is doing in the water at night when Im using it. By watching the fishes reaction in the day I can almost pinpoint when the strike will happen when Im using it at night... ------(edit here..I shouldnt have said it like that...This is what I meant to say.. By fishing the shallow waters I can tell what the fly is doing, Therefore also being aware of the strip that draws the most attention)----- just like all the flies I use.. after tying them I take them to the water and watch them.. over a period of about 5 - 7 days if I have caught a fish on that fly.. it comes out of the box and I reuse the hook... now... you want to here a secret... over the past 2 years since Ive started tying midges (and I tye alot of them).. Ive only caught 1 fish on a midge.. guys can go down all day long and have a 50+fish day.. I cant catch a fish on... so therefore I use the big flies... most all the flies I use day or night is a size 12 or bigger... Jim the next time you catch me down there.. Id be happy to show you these flies I use.. shoot... id even walk the back with you and throw a "BIG" sculpin (about 5in long)... Leonard http://www.taneycomonights.com
Fishhand Posted September 1, 2007 Posted September 1, 2007 I know this is kind of unfair because you don't know me... but, the last time I saw you fishing chute 1 was last Wednesday. You were fishing some type of streamer and you were working your way in between the people fishing the chute. There were approximately four other people fishing the chute (no generation). You did catch a nice brown. I'm not sure of the size, but it looked like a good one. I was across the lake from you, fishing the on the hump below the cable. I made it a point to watch you because of the glowing reports you've posted. How can you pinpoint when a fish is going to strike a fly at night? Even if you've watched it's action during the day? I know you can figure it's sink rate, but not when a fish is going to strike a fly you can't see...are you spotlighting those fish?
Leonard Posted September 1, 2007 Posted September 1, 2007 sink rate... I count how fast it sinks.. If it can touch the bottom by the count of 7 in 4 foot of water.. then when Im fishing in the current I need to judge how for to throw it up stream to get how deep I need to fish it... if there is not current.. then that tells me how deep or close to the bottom that it is ... depending on where Im fishing... as for the 4 people in the chute that day... your right... also if I remember right the day we are talking about 2 of those guy went up to the cable area waded out there with a guide... right... I was standing up in the chute... with 1 guy on one side of me and the other one on the other... also 1 guy standing in there that wasnt fishing (it was the 2 boys dad).. and yes the dad took a picture of the fish.. because I didnt take my camera.. he said he was going to e-mail it to me and hasnt yet.. But the when the other 2 guys came down with their guide... I stepped out of the way and headed down stream... http://www.taneycomonights.com
