chicken operation

Do any of our Roaring River regulars have any thoughts on the huge chicken farming operation that I've been told is coming to the area? It is very controversial. I would sure hate to see the water quality plummet but I don't really know enough to comment one way or the other.

Just curious what others think.

No local zonining and planning. That is why a few years ago they had to close a bunch of swimming areas on Beaver Lake, too much chicken poop in the water.

It all looks good on paper. But it's kinda like a nuclear power plant, all the precautions are put in place, but in only takes one melt down to completely ruin a great area.

I know where the farm is and I know by name only the people who are putting it in. It is my understanding that the thing that is causing the problem is that it required permission from neighbors living within a certain distance of the farm. Apparently all permissions were given then one of the neighbors changed their mind. Either second thoughts or presure from neighbors who were far enough away that they were not asked. As far as zoning goes, The farm is out on F hwy 10+ miles from the nearest town, zoning would have to come from the county level and that isn't going to happen. Truth of the matter is there are other chicken farms closer to the park than this one and it isn't like they are putting in a processing plant that uses huge amounts of water. They just have neighbors who know how to raise a stink.........

I feel the water useage is not the genuine concern here.

Any ground contaminant (liquids, solids or otherwise) works it's way through the soil hence the ground itself becomes natures filtration system.

Any surface contaminants within the watershed (the particular watershed in question Roaring River Spring) can and will impact the water quality of the spring that is recharged from that watershed.

Rain water (ground water) is the factor which determines the spring outputs and this factor plus run off determines the water flow level of our streams.

Both of these factors concerning any spring and it's TOTAL watershed will prove detramental to the water quality produced by the spring.

This environmental impact has to be considered when water quality comes into question.

The way it all works is often overlooked when 'Big Bucks' are to be made from any business or operation.

All coldwater hatcheries rely on this with the exception of Shepard of the Hills which relys on the cold water due to the depth of Table Rock Lake which creates desirable water temps for trout production. The quality of water in Table Rock passes right down through a system of impounded waters, several lakes.

When the headwaters or the source of water is not of good quality any and all bodies of water below the origin can and will suffer.

It's a delicate balance and any interference by man can disturb "Natures Way" of the way the whole system works.

This is my understanding and my opinion of the way it all comes together and I feel it is essential we must work with and understand "Natures Way".

We can either work with nature or attempt to control...controlling tends to achieve undesirable results and seems to not be working to the benifit of both, so, we all must raise a new level of awareness in an attempt to work with, not control or we will eventually be the demise of the very things we cherish.

We are CUTTING OUR OWN THROATS so to speak...the fix to me is to work together with nature instead of trying to control her...a better understanding and a new level of awareness must be achieved before desirable results will be seen.

It saddens me the direction we are taking...something has to give and awareness is the first step. Big money often takes presidence but by allowing it we are enabling the direction we are headed. JMHO

Brownie,

You make some very good points, But I don't believe the ground water contamination that you speak of comes from the farm itself. The chicken houses (in this case) will have to be cleaned to the specifications of the company that the growers work for and DNR. I feel the problem comes when people are allowed to spread the litter on the fields as fertilizer. Most chicken growing productions I know of sell the litter to farmers and they spread it. The contamination that you speak of could possible come from the fields of the neighbors who are complaining about the growing operation.

Secondly, They are using scare tactics talking about how it will affect the spring of RR but dye studies done several years ago by DNR proved that the water coming thru the spring of RR is coming from the Washburn, Seligman, Exeter areas. Those areas are littered with chicken growing operations, and farm land that have chicken and turkey litter spread on it frequently. In my opinion that is where we should focus our efforts if we want to stop contamination of RR.

Like I said I don't know anyone involved in this case, but I am bais because I hate to see one neighbor try to control another. I have seen several people move to the area that think because they bought a 1/2 acre a mile from you they can tell you how to run your business and financial well being.

If it is a problem and they can prove it, find people that feel the way they do run for office get elected and do something about it. but don't screw with peoples livelyhood because you don't like the way they look.

Sorry for the soapbox.
