kjackson Posted December 1, 2023 Posted December 1, 2023 Here's a short video about fly fishing for chum salmon, one of the least favored of the salmon tribe. https://midcurrent.com/videos/swinging-flies-for-chum-salmon/?goal=0_8efbf3b958-129c4a6636-43648214&mc_cid=129c4a6636&mc_eid=1a5d7619b2 I loved chum season because I could head down Hood Canal, if I left Port Townsend Bay, and hook into a bunch of chum and usually do it with no one else in the area. Although most salmon fishermen have little regard for the chum, it's mostly due to its white flesh, not that its fish was substandard as it was good fresh and excellent smoked. Chum salmon (also known as dog salmon because Indians would cure the fish for dog food) are strong fighters; in fact, back in the early days of Gary Loomis' rod building career, he wouldn't warranty a rod if broke while you were fishing for chum.
