Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted October 25, 2007 Root Admin Posted October 25, 2007 This past spring, we were worried about the acorn crop this fall because of the late freeze. What does it look like in your neck of the woods?
vonreed Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 Around me I've noticed some trees have zero to a few, and some trees are just loaded. I don't know if this was any different than past years or not. I'd think like a lot of others that there'd be a definite shortage though. I shot a turkey yesterday and it was half full of grasshoppers and half full of acorns, so who knows?
Seth Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 No white oak acorns at all around here. The pin and red oak tree's have quite a few little acorns for the most part. The deer have been eating the small acorns for a while now.
Terry Beeson Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 A friend of mine told me he was talking to an MDC biologist recently and talking about the lack of acorns due to the freeze. Well, the biologist said to remember that the red oaks made acorns LAST year for this year's crop... In other words, there might not be any white oak acorns, but should be plenty of red oak acorns. Well, sure enough, last time I was at the farm, it sounded like rain under the red oaks and the deer were feasting on them. They were ignoring corn feeders... They go nuts for acorns...
