patfish Posted November 2, 2007 Posted November 2, 2007 Just a little reminder, they put some fun a little closer to home for some of us yesterday. Trout in Saint Louis area lakes and ponds. I went to Wild Acres Park (Ashby and Midland, north of Page) yesterday morning looking for some... caught a 10" largemouth. Not a trout to be seen. However, since its only a couple of minutes from work, I went back at lunch, still nothing. As I was getting ready to head back to work, the MDC truck pulled up and dumped 500 (that's what the driver told me) trout in. Woo-Hoo!!! If any of you work out this way, look for me everyday at first light and around lunch time. I drive a green Toyo 4Runner, fly rod in hand. Its not much, but a fix is a fix. Tight lines all.
flyfishmaster Posted November 2, 2007 Posted November 2, 2007 patfish, Thanks for the info. I did not know they stocked them so early. I have never fished the Urban lakes yet. I'm only one mile from Walker lake in Kirkwood, so i know what I'm doing every lunch hour starting Monday. BTW: Are the best patterns to us streamers and Wooly Buggers? What do you recommend? patfish Posted November 2, 2007 Author Posted November 2, 2007 Hey FFM, oh, I forgot about Walker, I'll probably hit that on the commute home every now and then. Sweet! I have only fished at Busch Wild Life in the past and used pretty much the standard park fare. BH wollies, brown and green roaches, glo-balls, etc. I'm hitting Wild Acres here in an hour or so and I'll let you know what's working this afternoon. Peace.
Members kenjenmo Posted November 2, 2007 Members Posted November 2, 2007 I fished the lake at January Wabash Park in Ferguson a lot last year and caught some rainbows there, mostly used powerbait. Now I live in Lake Saint Louis so Busch Wildlife will be the closest trout lakes for me. I called the hotline and they said that they are in Lakes 21-24 this year. I hope to get out there soon!
Gavin Posted November 2, 2007 Posted November 2, 2007 Stopped by Tilles on my way to work..There were half a dozen dead trout in the water, so it must have recieved fish yesterday. Time to get out there and hammer on them before the bucket brigade gets them.
flyfishmaster Posted November 2, 2007 Posted November 2, 2007 I just found the St. Louis area Trout Stocking Hot Line: (636)300-9651. As of today not all the lakes have need stocked yet. FFM Woo Hoo Fish On!!
patfish Posted November 2, 2007 Author Posted November 2, 2007 I hit Wild Acres at lunch for an hour, two hits, no fish, maybe a little put off by the sun and there was a ton of moss around the bank up to 12' out. On the upside, I wasn't the only one there that scored a donut.
flyfshn Posted November 5, 2007 Posted November 5, 2007 Anybody doing any good? I had a couple of hours this afternoon, so I ran over to Vlsasis off Manchester Rd, but got skunked! The hotline said they released fish there, but as I was getting ready, there were 2 other people leaving and they said they were not biting. I thought maybe they did not know how to fish and what to use . No such luck. Fish On! Mike Utt “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery. jjtroutbum Posted November 5, 2007 Posted November 5, 2007 Think I'll run by Sueson Park and see if I can fool a couple sometime this week with the long rod. Kayser Posted November 6, 2007 Posted November 6, 2007 Not really an urban area, but same type of fishing- Randolph County Lake near Chester, IL stocked trout mid-October. Caught about 12 in 2 hrs using a #12 Hare's Ear 1-3' under a small indicator. I focused on small depressions where I knew they would be at. Some chases on streamers, but no hits. Nice little fix for the trout fishing. Rob WARNING!! Comments to be interpreted at own risk. Time spent fishing is never wasted.
