Fly Fishing With The Ex

Recommended Posts

We've always heard that Time heals all wounds, but I think fly fishing is a close runner up for doing the same thing, at least for my ex and I.

She loves to fly fish and has come into her own as far as her skills go. While there were other issues that caused problems for us, we never once argued about fishing. She usually wanted to go with me but sometimes couldn't. And if I went alone, she was fine with that too. I hope there are other guys on here that don't have to argue with their wives or girlfriends about fishing. Sadly I know a few that almost have do every time.

Well, she called the other day and wants to go up to BTW to fish tomorrow. I said fine. This is not the first time we've fished together post-divorce, so I look forward to it. She doesn't tie flies, so I told I would. Only difference now is I charge her a $.50 a bug. That free ride is over. :D

Her call made me wonder if there are others with similar stories about how fly fishing has affected their lives in such unintended ways.

I think that's awesome. Good for you. It's a shame more divorced couples don't let old hurts and hard feelings go. As the son of parents who were divorced (over 30 years ago) and still barely speak I applaud you.

But I'm not judging anyone (including my parents). I know divorce can be a hard and hurtful thing. I've been happily married for 25 years so I just don't know what that is like.

Yeah, I figured I'd get a range of responses...haha. I guess since we didn't have any custody issues to work out things turned out for the better. But I don't think getting back together is an option. We both know this, so all we talk about is fly fishing.

I took my ex wife fishing once not too long ago, and as luck would have it, just as I am starting to REALLY enjoy myself, the game warden approches me and tells me to get my foot off her head so she can get out of the water. Those wardens spoil all the fun!

You are so stupid you threw a rock at the ground and missed.

Great story. Go for it if it works. What it tell me about both of you is are mature adults. Divorce is a difficult experience but with understanding both can make it through it and still be friends.

I have done some counseling with marriages that ended in divorce. Those who carried the battle on and on only punished themselves. Those who let it go and moved on often becoming friends survived with little lasting damage.
